1/24/1924 - 03/17/2021 Mary K. Stanley passed away on March 17, 2021 at the age of 97. She was a long time resident of San Pedro. She is survived by daughter Paula, son-in-law Joe Bowker, grandsons Michael Bowker (Theresa), Neil Bowker (Laura), and four great-grandchildren who will miss her very much: Jonathan, Sarah, Cyrrus and Michael. Mom was an achiever and more education was always her goal. She grew up on a farm in Kansas loving school, playing basketball and learning to play the flute and viola. After graduating from Piedmont High School, she taught elementary school before moving to Long Beach, CA with her cousin Marie and getting a job at Douglas Aircraft. It was there where she met a handsome young man named Harold who became her husband for over 60 years. (d. 2009) Before they married, she returned to Kansas for nursing school, then back to California to work and to help Dad through his Masters work. She loved being a nurse and helping people. She took classes whenever she could and received her Bachelors, Masters, and PhD degrees from UCLA. She was also active in local nursing organizations, rising to be president of the California State Nurses Association in 1965. Mary and Harold loved to travel. They visited Alaska, Europe, Canada and all over the USA. They traveled to Boston to visit daughter Paula and son-in-law Joe. They visited as often as they could especially after two grandchildren were born. She referred to herself as "Dr Grandma" and had a license plate "DRGRNMA". At the end of her career, she was a nursing instructor at Los Angeles Harbor College, then chair of the nursing department and evening Dean. She was also instrumental in the planning of the new Health Care Education Building at Harbor College. She enjoyed being active in organizations: Assistance League of San Pedro/South Bay, Order of Eastern Star, San Pedro Bay Historical Society and Republican Women Federated. People remember her sweet smile, her organizational skills and kind words of encouragement. Be at peace Mom, we love you. Funeral service will be held at Ocean View Baptist Church, San Pedro at Noon on April 1, 2021 and interment at Green Hills Memorial Park at 1:30pm. Feel free to wear bright colors Mom did.
