July 19, 1933 - April 9, 2021 Loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully with her loved ones at her side, after a brave battle with Alzheimer's. She was born July 19, 1933 in Alavieska, Finland. She had one older brother Olavi. Their mom passed away when Helena was one. She lived with her grandmother until she was four, then went to live with her aunt Selma, who had 13 children. She happily tended to the cows on their farm and read all the books in the library. Her beloved aunt Eva came and got her one day, when she was 16, and moved her to Helsinki. There she worked as a maid for the owner of a shipping company. Her best friends were the cook and the chauffeur. When she was 18 she went to a dance with her friends, where she met her future husband Reino. She said he picked her up and spun her around, and it was love at first sight. They were engaged a year later and married the next year in 1953. A year later, their first daughter Hannele was born. They moved to the US in 1956. Their second daughter Anita was born in 1957 in San Pedro, where they made their home. Helena loved taking care of her family, cooking for them and tending to her garden. She had the most beautiful roses. She loved dancing and going to parties with Reino and their Finnish friends. Helena and Reino loved to travel. Their favorite places were Yosemite, Hawaii and Finland, where they loved to visit their relatives. Helena is survived by her daughter Hannele (Dennis) Powers, daughter Anita McCoy, granddaughters Jamie (Theo) Rex, Jenny Powers, Julie (Andrew) Caldwell, grandson Jason (Renatta) Daum, great-grandsons Benjamin and Hunter Rex, and Jack Daum. A private family service will be held at Green Hills Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to the Alzheimer's Association.
