Regina M. Rael, 66, died in the early morning of April 29, 2021, at home in Tucumcari surrounded by family.
Services are set to begin at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 306 W. High St. in Tucumcari.
Regina was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Benito Rael Jr., who died July 17, 2013. They were married May 2, 1970, and would have marked their 51st anniversary this year.
She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Monica and Ruben Sanchez of Marfa, Texas, Veronica and Jimmy Encinias of Tucumcari, Albenita "Beany" Rael of Tucumcari, and Benito Rael III and Julia Abeyta of Santa Rosa; as well as her 13-year-old tabby cat, Meow Meow.
Regina was born on October 24, 1954, in Tucumcari. Her mother was Epimenia "Pima" Garcia and her father was Frank Lucero, both of whom preceded her in death. She was the first of three children for Garcia and Lucero. She is also survived by her sister, Ida Lucero; and her brother, Edward Lucero. Regina was preceded in death by her brother, Louis Lucero.
Regina was also survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean Rael, Rita York, Bertha Garcia, Freddy Lucero and Anthony Lucero. Regina's mother-in-law, Agustina Rael, preceded her in death.
Regina worked for the New Mexico State Police until she retired in 2005.
Regina loved her large and growing family. She had 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom called her Nana.
Regina was known for her sewing skills. She made numerous quilts and other crafts by hand throughout her life.
She was a devout Catholic who was a lifelong member of St. Anne's.
