Robert Henning Hollmer

TAYLOR RIDGE-Robert Henning Hollmer, 95, of Taylor Ridge, died Monday, November 22, 2021 at Silver Cross Pavilion at Friendship Manor, Rock Island. A graveside service will be 11 am Friday, November 26, 2021 at the Davenport Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, Davenport, Iowa. Military honors will be presented. Visitation will be from 9-10 am Friday, November 22, 2021 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan. Memorials may be made in care of Friendship Manor, Rock Island or the American Cancer Society in memory of his beloved wife, Doris and children, Douglas and Judith.
Robert was born in Davenport, Iowa on May 12, 1926, a son of Henning and Bessie Brown Hollmer. He married Doris E. Roussell on February 4, 1947 in Davenport. She preceded him in death in July of 2011.
Robert served in the U.S Navy during WWII. He was a bricklayer for the Bricklayers Local #6 and retired in the late 80's.
Robert was an avid horse enthusiast who enjoyed raising, training and showing horses. He was on the Rock Island County Zoning Board for twenty plus years. Robert was very involved with the Democratic Party serving in many different capacities. He enjoyed keeping and maintaining his yard and he loved and cherished his family.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Karen (Mike) Hines, Rock Island and Susan (Dave) Wynn, Milan; nine grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Hollmer, Rock Island; son-in-law, Marty Bradley, Burlington, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Darlene Carstens and Mary Piercy; and numerous niece and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sons, Michael and Douglas Hollmer, daughter, Judith Hollmer-Bradley, sisters, Lois Butt, Ruth Steffen and Joann Hollmer and brother, Donald Hollmer.

Whitey was great with horses! He helped with ours many times over the years and I have some photos that I would like to share with his family. Here's one taken when my dad hired Whitey to take our "Sky" to the Chicago International in the late 50's.
