Wilbur K. Slater

1924 - 2017 Obituary Condolences
Wibur K. "Bill" Slater Bill was born July 26, 1924, in Riverside County, CA. He died of natural causes New Year's Eve, 2017. Mostly raised in an orphanage and foster homes, he joined the navy one week after he turned seventeen. Five months later he was at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He met his future bride, Helen, while on leave in San Francisco and they married after the war. They lived in San Francisco until 1984 then moved to Lake County where they had property in Lakeport. Bill was a truck driver and hauled cars for a living. He believed strongly in unions so the common person could receive decent wages and benefits. He worked tirelessly for Teamsters for a Democratic Union (TDU), by walking picket lines, passing out fliers, giving heartfelt speeches, and recruiting others to join TDU. Bill was very fond of his nieces and nephews and they would call and visit often. His grand-daughter and great- grandchildren gave him much joy. He liked keeping in touch with old friends and hours long conversations were not unusual. Bill made friends easily, he was engaging and charismatic and always injected humor into any conversation. Bill was a familiar face at Renee's restaurant where he was treated like royalty by the owner and staff. He was very grateful for the many free breakfasts he received from customers and staff. The genuine affection he received at Renee's was a great source of happiness to Bill in his final years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, (2007), and son, Bill, (1991). He is survived by his daughter, Leslie Slater (Tim Snider), granddaughter, Sarah Santana (Auggie), and great-grandchildren, William and Emily.
