Lawrence Jubb Obituary

GREENFIELD - Lawrence Arthur "Larry" Jubb, Sr. died July 8, 2016 surrounded by the love of his family and a strong faith in God. Born on Aug. 28, 1935, to Yvonne Iona (Farmer) and Joseph Arthur Jubb, Larry attended Greenfield schools, graduating from Greenfield High School in 1954. He then went on to graduate from St. Anselm's College in 1959 with a degree in biology.
On July 9, 1957, Larry met JoAnne Frances Schuckert, the love of his life, at a surprise birthday party she threw for herself. He was immediately smitten. They were married on Aug. 6, 1960, and remained devoted to each other until her passing on Oct. 27, 2014.
He is survived by his children, who consider him to be their hero and best friend, the greatest story teller in the world, and the most amazing dad anyone could ask for. Grieving deeply are Kristen J. Watters of Greenfield, James Jubb and his wife, Susan, of Millis, Karen Woodward and her husband, James, of Deerfield and Patrick Jubb and his wife, Kimberly, of Southwick. His oldest son and namesake, Lawrence Arthur Jubb, Jr., passed away on July 16, 2015.
While his children were the apples of his eye, the pride and love Pa felt for his grandchildren was what kept his heart full. He leaves Samuel Watters of Washington, D.C.; Johnathan and Connor Jubb and their mother Mary Sheridan of Hatfield; Lauren, Jessica and Ryan Jubb of Millis; Sarah and Emily Woodward of Deerfield; and Noah, Aidan and Joseph Jubb of Southwick. Additionally, he had deep affection for Kimberly Jubb's sister, Tegan Kimball, her husband Jeffrey, and their children Arianna, Zachary and George, who also knew him as "Pa".
Larry is further survived by his sisters, Constance (Robert) Tombs, Cheryl Jubb and Janice Newton, with whom he remained close throughout his life. He also leaves his "favorite sister-in-Law" Janet Lapinski, his loving cousin Dottie Keefe and numerous nieces and nephews.
Upon graduating from college, Larry served in the Massachusetts National Guard, obtaining the rank of sergeant E-6, and was platoon sergeant of the 2nd Platoon. He was named Outstanding Regimental Soldier at Fort Knox Armed Training Center in 1960.
Larry was Sales Manager at Snow's Dairy and later ran the family home-improvement business, which his father founded in 1947. In 1988, Larry's oldest son followed in his footsteps and took over the business, extending it to a third generation.
Deciding to change the arc of his life, Larry followed his passion for helping others and began working at the Franklin County Sheriff's Department as a Deputy Sheriff Triad officer, which he considered the most rewarding job of his lifetime. Working in elder crime prevention, he loved being able to visit elders, whom he could help and comfort. He also served for a number of years as a special police officer for the town of New Salem.
Jubb was a past Exalted Ruler of the Greenfield Lodge of Elks, committee member of the Elks Membership Investigation Team and cofounder of the Elks Golf League. He was past president of the Franklin Shrine Club and a member of Melha Shriners, as well as a former member of the Republican Lodge of Masons. When he was a member of the Country Club of Greenfield, he acted as Vice President and then Chairman of the Greens Committee. He was active in the past as a Lions Club Member, a Town Meeting Member and Zoning Board Member, served as Transportation Chair for the Emergency Management Team for the town of Greenfield, and was a member of the Planned Urban Development Group. He chaired Boy Scouts Troop 5 and Cub Scouts Pack 3 for a number of years and also served on the Great Trails Boy Scout Council. Raising three sons who were active in hockey, Larry was also heavily involved in the Franklin County Youth Hockey League.
Larry was a member of the Board of Trustees of Franklin First Credit Union, a member of the Board of Directors for the Greenfield Senior Center, was a member of the Senior Center Building Committee, and founder of a now annual Meals on Wheels benefit dinner, as well as a co-founder of the "Warm The Elders" annual charity golf tournament.
When he lived in Vermont, Larry belonged to the Jaycees and actively campaigned for Phil Huff, who became the first Democratic Governor of Vermont in 119 years. He also worked for Timothy O'Connor's successful campaign for State Representative and later Speaker of the Vermont House of Representatives.
Larry belonged to the Long Trail Association for a number of years and enjoyed backpacking and "roughing it" with his sons. He loved hunting in the wilderness of Maine with his best buddies every year, as well as on a friend's land in Leyden. He taught hunter safety in Franklin County and was a member of the Turners Falls Rod and Gun Club.
Larry loved the outdoors – especially hiking in the mountains. He taught his children about the splendor of nature, and family time was spent snowshoeing, fishing, hiking and exploring the woods, where he was always eager to share his knowledge of the flora and fauna. Larry was also an avid rock collector, traveling all over New England to amass a collection that was once displayed in the Greenfield Public Library.
An active member of Blessed Sacrament Church for many years, Larry and his wife were involved in many parish activities.
Larry was an avid reader and on any given day, could be found delivering his books to senior centers, shut-ins and friends. He loved golf, crossword puzzles, pitch, traveling, history and photography, but most of all, Larry loved spending time with his family in Ogunquit, Maine, every summer.
The love and devotion Larry showed to his wife during her lengthy illness taught his family the true meaning of "unconditional love" while the bravery, dignity and strength he demonstrated during his brief terminal illness taught his family how to live each day to the fullest, carry on without complaint and put the feelings of others above your own at all times.
They say that "A good life is not defined by making ourselves happy, it is defined by making sure we do all that we can to help others" and as a family, we wholeheartedly agree that Larry has led a good life indeed….
Per Larry's request, in lieu of flowers, please share a good book with a beloved friend or perhaps take a long walk through the woods, get involved in your community or spend the day with your family on the beach. Donations may be made to Boston Children's Hospital, 300 Longwood Avenue, Boston, MA 02115 or LifePath's, Meals on Wheels, 330 Montague City Road, Turners Falls, MA 01376.
The children of Lawrence Arthur Jubb Sr. would also like to thank Hospice of Franklin County for their compassionate care during his brief illness.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday (7/13) at 10am at Blessed Sacrament Church, 221 Federal St. in Greenfield, with the Rev. Timothy J. Campoli, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday (7/12) from 4 to 7 p.m. at Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St. in Greenfield.

My wife, Chris and I were so very sorry to hear of Larry's death. We went to high school with Larry and he was a really good friend of mine. I used to call him whenever I came into Greenfield after my wife and I moved to North Carolina in 1965. Super neat friend, and know that all the people that Larry cared about when he would volunteer in different organizations will GREATLY miss him!
Please know that God only takes the best, most loving giver of their time
for others, especially his family, to be with Him in heaven.

With Love & Sadness,
George and Chris Mastaler

Although the time I knew Larry was brief, he made a lasting impact on me and my belief in the goodness of people and community.
