Vernetta Coppedge (Livingston) passed away peacefully at home on January 29, 2021 at the age of 89. She was born December 19, 1931 to Richard and Juanita Livingston in Harlem, NY. Vernetta, know to her siblings and close friends as Ms. Sister, grew up in Manhattan, NY and later relocated to Newburgh, NY.
She was predeceased by her husband, Horace Coppedge; her daughter, Elaine J. Spell (Johnston); her son, Fredrick J. Johnston Jr.; brother, Richard Livingston; sister, Elise Gash, and brother, Earl Livingston. She is survived by her children: Paulette Holland of Newburgh, NY, Vernetta M. Davis (Johnston) of Albany, NY, Toni S. Elmore of Newburgh, NY, Gretchen A. Johnston of Albany, NY, and Vernon A. Coppedge of Newburgh. She also leaves behind a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren to live on in her memory.
She worked at St. Luke's Hospital as a night nurse assistant, and then worked at the Holden Home as a cook. From there she worked at NCAC Head Start Program and became the head cook, and worked there until retirement. She was a member of Baptist Temple, Newburgh, NY.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, February 5 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh, with prayers of comfort offered by Pastor Dolly Ann Newkirk Briggs of Baptist Temple Church, Newburgh at 2:30 p.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newburgh. The family asks that any flowers or donations be held until after the burial at Cedar Hill.
