Robert Ritter (Bob) Humphrey III, aged 72, of Beulah, MI, passed away in his sleep on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at The Maples Benzie County Medical Care Facility in Frankfort, MI. He is survived by his wife, Dorcas C. (Small) Humphrey, of Beulah.
Bob was the oldest son of Robert R. II and Rosaetta Humphrey of Cheboygan, MI, and she survives. He is also survived by his two brothers, Russell Humphrey and Walter (Pam) Humphrey, both of Cheboygan. Also surviving are his father-in-law, Lewis Small, of Beulah; two sisters-in-law, Cheri (Terry) Williams of Kalkaska, MI, and Teresa (Marshal) Mattson of Adrian, MI; 6 nieces, 2 nephews; and 13 grand-nieces and -nephews.
Bob was born in Cheboygan on July 9, 1948. After graduation from Cheboygan High School, he attended Lake Superior State University, graduating with a degree in biology. He was employed by the Michigan Department of Resources Fisheries Division and worked as a biologist at the Platte River State Fish Hatchery in Honor, retiring in 2004 after 32 years.
Bob met his wife Dorcas (Dee) on a blind date in August, 1975, and they were married three months later. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on November 7, 2020—socially distanced because of COVID-19.
Bob had the heart of a volunteer. As a teenager, he volunteered as a youth conservation officer and ran the movie projectors at Cheboygan's drive-in movie theater. In his later years, he became known around Beulah for his willingness to weed gardens and shovel snow for neighbors and friends.
Bob loved being outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, snow-shoeing, canoeing, and fishing in the many small lakes and streams of Benzie County. He had a kind heart for animals of all kinds. If anyone had a question about nature or wildlife, he was the guy to ask.
Bob had a strong faith in God. Throughout their married life, he would read aloud to Dee from the Bible, and in the last year of life, hearing her read Scripture aloud to him helped to bring him peace.
Cremation has taken place. Interment of the cremains will be this summer at Benzonia Township Cemetery in Benzonia, MI.
The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home, in Beulah, is in charge of arrangements.
