JOYE EATON WHITTEN October 17, 1924 ~ June 19, 2018 Joye Whitten passed away on June 19, 2018. She was 93 years old. Joye was born October 17, 1924, to Henry and Julia Eaton on their farm in the Red Bank District; she was the fourth of six children. She attended the little country school her mother taught and then graduated from Red Bluff High in 1941. Joye then attended Chico State College during the lean, war years and was one of only 30 students graduated in 1945. Her teaching career began at the Lincoln Street School in Red Bluff. The following year in 1946, she married Homer Whitten, moved into the Whitten family home on Reeds Creek Road, and began a mixed career as wife, mother, and teacher. She taught for a total of 38 years in elementary schools at Los Molinos, Antelope, and Red Bluff. Most of her years were spent at Bidwell Elementary teaching sixth grade. Following retirement, she pursued her love of teaching by continuing to teach Sunday school for many years at Community Baptist Church where she was a long-time member. Many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were privileged to receive instruction from her in reading, penmanship, drawing, playing piano, and identifying wildflowers. Homer and Joye were married for 60 years until he preceded her in death in 2007. They had four children, eleven grandchildren, and twenty great-grandchildren. She delighted that the family could gather for celebrations several times a year. She insisted on preparing most of the food for these gatherings when she was into her mid-eighties. Her family, home, friends, and church were her main interests in life. Her sons and their wives, Rod and Linda Whitten of Burlingame and Greg and Peggy Whitten of Sacramento, and her daughters and their husbands, Vicki and Rod Mortensen of Red Bluff and Lori and Larry Howard of Mesquite, Nevada, survive Joye. Her grandchildren include Diane and Mark Amaro of Willows, David and Rosa Whitten of San Carlos, Jed and Rhea Whitten, Josh Whitten, Christi Whitten, and Hunter and Jenny Whitten of Sacramento, Zach and Hannah Whitten of Red Bluff, and Brina and Luke Montoya and Hayley Mortensen of North Carolina. Great-grandchildren include Gina, Maci, George, and Kate Amaro, Noah, Ellie, Charlotte, Isaiah, Abby, David, Ruth, Esther, Naomi, Miriam, Michael, Julia, Benjamin, and Addison Whitten, and Asher and Bryce Montoya. Besides her husband, brothers Arnold, Duffy, and Jack Eaton, sisters Marie Hablitzel and June Cox, and infant grandchildren Katie and John Henry Whitten predeceased Joye. Services will be held August 4, 2018, 11:00 A.M., at Community Baptist Church in Red Bluff.
