KATCHEN "KATIE" COSTA In Memoriam
KATCHEN "KATIE" COSTA 1919 ~ 2018 Katie Costa, a longtime resident and active member of the Los Molinos community, passed away on January 7, 2018 at the age of 98 at Brookdale Senior Living facility in Red Bluff, California. Described by others as a neat lady, she loved to sing and dance and cook and travel, to celebrate occasions with backyard parties, and to invite friends over for waffle breakfasts. She was always willing to participate and run things when needed. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. She was born Katchen Margarete Thiele in 1919 in Germany and grew up in the large German city of Hamburg, where, beginning in 1933 at the age of fourteen, she was forced to participate in Nazi youth rallies and parades. After graduating from grade school in April 1935, she performed a required year of labor on a farm near Hamburg, followed by a year of cooking school and apprenticeship. In 1937, two years before the start of World War II, Katie got the opportunity to immigrate to California to work in her aunt's restaurant in San Carlos, where she met and later married Joe Costa. In 1944, they bought and moved to an almond orchard on the north side of the town of Los Molinos, where they raised five sons. She was active in a number of local school and community activities such as PTA, FFA, Women's Club, and Grange. She was a driving force in the Tehama County Museum for a number of years. In her later years, she became interested in senior issues, becoming actively involved in senior nutrition and aging programs, and managing the Los Molinos senior center for seven years. In the early 1990's, she sold part of her farm property in Los Molinos to a developer for the express purpose of building subsidized affordable housing for local seniors. The resulting 36 unit Sherwood Manor Apartments is still in operation today. The new water well which was constructed for that project was a contributing factor in the later establishment of the Los Molinos Community Services District. She is predeceased in death by her husband Joe and three sons, Frank, Larry and Bill. She is survived by two sons Jim and Joe and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Per her wishes, no service is planned. Katie will be interred privately in Los Molinos cemetery. Memorial donations in her name can be sent to the Talbott-King Scholarship Fund at Los Molinos High School or other . The family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale for the outstanding care she has received while there for the last four years.
