I have had opportunity to know Alan Curtis pretty well. Not only is his son James Curtis among the greatest of friends, but I also had the opportunity to know him both personally and professionally.
I will always be indebted to him as an Advanced Pavement Management course James and he taught in 1996 became the deciding factor in being hired by the City of Colorado Springs Streets Division in 2002, after 4 1/2 months without employment.
Early in my college life he encouraged me to go into something I really believed in, and year's later I came to see just how much he loved helping others professionally. I believe this attitude permeated in all his activities, so that there was little separation between the two.
Moreover, I've been a recipient of his kindness, his hospitality, and his concern on more than one occasion. When he came to visit with James in Colorado Springs a few years ago, he spent his time in the back seat with my son, telling jokes and giving him verbal mind puzzles to work on. It was a great experience for my son to have an adult relate to him on his level at my son's age.
Alan is survived by many who love and care about him, loving family members especially his kids James and Aleah, his wife and many, many friends that he's made, including the least of which is me.
Sincerely, Nathan Lowry

Dear Deborah and Family,
Very sorry to hear of Alan's passing. I met him in the early 1980's when we were both starting up our businesses. As a layperson, I always enjoyed having Alan explain the streets I drove on each day. He was the only one to give reasonable explanation of why Cal-Trans
took a motorized hammer and fractured all the 2 year old concrete they had put in I-5 through Redding.
He was a true gentleman with a kind way about himself. I will miss our visits.
Hope you alway have happy memories of the good times you shared with Alan.
