Ellen Nowell Disparte Obituary

Ellen, a Redlands native passed away on January 16th, 2018. Ellen was born on June 18th, 1922 in Redlands to Jesse and Rhoda Nowell, early Redlands citrus farmers. No stranger to hard work, Jesse and Rhoda soon began planting young citrus trees by hand, which later became their livelihood. Ellen was an only child, so her dogs, cats, goats, poultry, and nature became a surrogate for her siblings. Ellen worked the groves with her parents, and she even learned to drive a Model T at the age of five. Graduating from the University of Redlands with a degree in Education, and a Minor in Spanish, Ellen secured a fourth-grade teaching position in Yucaipa. Later Ellen met her future husband, Phil J. Disparte at a dance. Together, they had five children: Phillip, Warren, Sally, Anita, and Alan. Ellen retired from teaching, but her love of teaching did not stop there. Ellen was a strong advocate for education. She was a natural born teacher who loved imparting her knowledge onto her children, and to anyone who was fortunate enough to visit her farm. Ellen was a citrus farmer, dairy goat farmer, pig farmer, poultry farmer, an endurance horse rider, a traveler, a master gardener, and a gourmet cook. She was a strong, optimistic, decisive, fearless, independent lady who stood up for what she thought was right no matter the odds. In terms of health and nutrition, she was far ahead of her time and kept a very active lifestyle into old age.
Ellen's family invites family and friends to join our celebration of her full and wonderful life on Friday, February 9th at 11:00am at the First Baptist Church on 51 West Olive Avenue in Redlands; graveside burial at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Redlands will follow right after the church service.
