George died peacefully in his home on February 6, 2018 at the age of 91. He was a Yucaipa resident for 64 years. George is survived by his two sons, Douglas (Jan) and Stephen (Cindy), both of Yucaipa and his two brothers Robert of San Diego, and Patrick of Coachella. Three Grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. George was born on August 18, 1926 in Holtville, California to John and Bernice Leja, who had immigrated from Poland. He and his ten brothers and sisters worked the family farm in Imperial Valley. Following High School graduation in 1944, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as an Infantryman in WWII. George saw combat in the Pacific Theater, and distinguished himself as a superior soldier by clearing enemy tunnels and rousting Japanese fighters from their caves. After the war, George was a star football player for San Diego State College. He then served over 30 years as Director of Parks and Recreation in two California counties. A man of vision, wisdom, and courage, George is known for contributing a legacy of service to his fellow man. His fore-sight and personal labor were central in the creation and development of numerous Parks and Community Centers throughout Yucaipa Valley.
His service is at 11 AM on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the United Methodist Church of Yucaipa, 35177 Beech Ave. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.
