Janet E. Green Obituary
June 19, 1925 - February 22, 2018

Janet was born on June 19, 1925 in Wasco, California to Jessie and Thomas Lytle, and passed away February 22, 2018 in her home in Redlands, California, with her son, James, "Jamie" of Redlands, who lived with and cared for Janet during her final decade, by her side. Her last days were also shared with her younger sister, Phyllis of Ridgecrest and Redlands, California, her eldest daughter, Kathleen of Chicago, Illinois, and her second daughter, Lisa, of Redlands.

Janet grew up in Imperial Valley where her father developed a thriving farming enterprise. Janet, a graduate of the University of Redlands, and her husband, Jim, a WWII Army Air Corp Veteran, built and managed residential properties in Redlands and had their own sand-blasting business, Green's Sandblasting.

Janet loved her children, Montana, music, family and friends, her church community and Jesus Christ her Lord. She was an active member of the PEO and First Presbyterian Church of Redlands, where she belonged to the Women's Circle, served as a Deacon, and participated in Sunday School teaching. Janet was an educator at heart. She started her career as an elementary school teacher for the Ontario school district, and later substitute taught while also serving as administrative assistant for the family businesses. After retiring, she continued to use her educational skills to teach in after school volunteer reading and homework programs for children. Janet was an aspiring writer of essays and children's books, and her letters of eloquent prose are some of the most cherished possessions of her children.

Janet loved music. She played the violin and used to enjoy family chamber music with her sister Phyllis (flute), mother Jessie and daughter Kathy (piano), and later enjoyed singing songs with her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Chris. Janet's enthusiasm for music even inspired her Motocross-riding son to play two seasons in the Monarch Junior High marching band as a percussionist. She was an annual season ticket holder to the University of Redlands Orchestra and frequently attended performances of the Redlands Symphony and Redlands Bowl.

Throughout her life Janet sought out adventure wherever she found it. She loved hiking, camping and seeing the world. She enjoyed many adventures with her sister Phyllis in Yosemite, the Grand Canyon and wherever else their boots met the ground. She honeymooned with Jim in beautiful Lake Tahoe, enjoyed family and church campouts and trips to the National Parks and led her daughter Kathy's Girl Scout troop on hikes in the San Bernardino mountains. The family spent summer weekends in a rustic cabin in Forest Falls, complete with outhouse and black widow spiders, which Janet bravely exterminated at the beginning of each visit. Following the death of her beloved Jim in 1997, she enjoyed traveling with her daughter Lisa, including a trip to China, and with her friend Fran on a Mediterranean cruise where they could be seen riding camels with the pyramids in the background. In retirement, Janet and Jim enjoyed their summers in a close-knit community perched above Hebgen Lake outside of West Yellowstone, Montana, and passed this beautiful tradition on to their children.

Janet is survived by her eldest daughter Kathleen (Rex, son-in-law), second daughter Lisa (Chris, son-in-law), son James, her only sister Phyllis and her three children (Carolyn, Joseph, and Robert) and grandchildren. She is also survived by her step-daughter, Peggy, granddaughter Sue and her children including daughter Rebecca, great-grandchildren of Jim's deceased grandson Tony, niece Shenita, and numerous great nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Janet's Life was held at the First Presbyterian Church, 100 Cajon St. in Redlands, CA on Sunday, March 4th, 2018 at 2pm.
