Janis Wells Gerry Obituary
August 06, 1946 - April 06, 2018

Long time Santa Barbara resident Janis Wells Gerry died unexpectedly and peacefully in her sleep April 6, 2018.  She was born August 6, 1946 in Redlands, California,  to a pioneer orange grower family.  Her parents, Doris Wilbur Wells and D. Lowell Wells, predeceased her.  She is survived by her cherished friend Sandy Swart of Morro Bay, who helped her through many health challenges.  She is also survived by many loving friends and family members, including her brother Judson "Jud" Wells and sister-in-law Linda Wells of Fullerton, aunt and uncle Frances and Lynn Wilbur of Redlands,  uncle Wesley Wilbur of Riverside, and 6 cousins.
Janis graduated from Redlands High School in 1964 and went on to earn a Bachelors Degree in Home Economics, a teaching credential, and a Masters Degree in counseling from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.  She became an educator, teaching at all levels from middle school to university.  Initially, she taught home economics in public schools on the central coast and in San Diego.  She won awards from California Teachers Association for her outstanding abilities.  Eventually she returned to Cal Poly SLO to teach interior design classes for 4 years, after which she moved to her favorite city, Santa Barbara, where she spent the rest of her life.  She developed Adult Education interior design curriculum for Santa Barbara City College and taught many classes.
Janis' family and friends will miss her creative and giving personality and may honor her by doing a kind deed in memory of her.  As she requested, her ashes will be spread in the ocean by friends.
