Margarete Reading Obituary
Margarete Reading
Margarete Reading, a longtime resident of the Redlands area, went to be with her Lord on December 10, 2017, at the age of 94. Margarete (known as "Maggie") was born Margarete Helen Badstubner in 1923 in Inglewood Ca, to parents who had immigrated from Germany. She and her three brothers grew up in Hawthorne where she graduated from Hawthorne High School and Compton Junior College. In 1941, after a brief secretarial career, she married Philip Reading and embarked upon a career as a homemaker. They eventually settled in Redlands in 1949 where Phil owned a tire and alignment business and Maggie taught baton classes. Her baton troupe, "The Twirlerettes", appeared at numerous local events and parades and were even featured on television.
Aside from some years spent in Oregon, Colorado and Arkansas, they made their home in the Redlands area, primarily in Mountain Home Village, for the next 68 years.
A highly organized and efficient person, Maggie threw herself enthusiastically into two areas: her career as a Mom and a homemaker, where she excelled in all things related to making a house a home, and her faith. When Phil became a pastor in his later years, Maggie dedicated herself to Bible research, compiling volumes of scriptural references on various topics. In addition, she ministered to many individuals who came to her for guidance on spiritual matters.
After her husband's death in 2008, Maggie continued to live in Redlands, eventually moving to The Village at Redlands, where she spent her final years.
She is survived by her four children, Scott Reading (Rita) of Redlands, Laurel Miller (Timothy) of Mountain Home Village, Randall Reading (Dianne) of Redlands, Clark Reading (Karla) of Sacramento, in addition to 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
A private service will be held later in the month.
