Bill was born in Livingston, Montana, Sept. 12, 1918. He grew up in McMinnville, Oregon and attended Linfield College, graduating with a BA in English and Drama in 1940. Was active in drama, played on the tennis team, and was student body president in his senior year. He met Muriel Huntly of Portland, and the two were married at the University of Chicago, where Bill earned an MA in English in June 1942. Bill joined the Navy that year and served three years as communications officer on a Naval transport in the Pacific. Following his discharge in 1946, the couple and their daughter Janet settled in Sunnyvale, CA, and Bill attended Stanford University on the GI Bill, earning a PhD in English, specializing in linguistics and medieval literature. Bill began his teaching career as a part time instructor at Stanford and then taught at the following institutions: University of Omaha 1946-47, Texas Christian University 1950-1953, University of Redlands, 1953-1969, California State University Northridge, 1969-86. His special teaching assignments were at: University of Helsinki, Finland, 1960-61: University of Redlands Salzburg Program, 1964-65; Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, 1963; University of Hawaii, Summer 1970.
Bill is survived by daughter Janet of Dallas, TX and son James of Laguna Hills, CA, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
