Dorothy Mae De Young
Was born April 8, 1924 in Redlands, California. She went to heaven at Redlands Community Hospital on April 11, 2014 at the age of 90 years old. Dorothy attended Redlands Christian School and graduated from Redlands High School. Growing up she worked in her father's diary on New York Street. On February 28, 1944 Dorothy married Bernard (Bud) De Young. Over their 58 year marriage Dorothy helped operate De Young's Poultry Market on Colton Ave. and Ralph's Bargain Spot on Orange Street. Dorothy resided in Plymouth Village after moving from her home after Bud's passing.
Dorothy raised five children who survive her: Bernard De Young Jr. (Cheryl), Glenda Molenkamp (Bob), Mae De Bruyn (Jon who preceded Dorothy to heaven), Mary De Waard (Paul), and Faith Irwin (Scot). She has a beloved sister, Betty Dykstra in Michigan. Dorothy's legacy continues through her 14 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Dorothy and Bud were originally members of the Christian Reformed Church were she was an organist/pianist for many years before they began attending Redlands Calvary Chapel. Dorothy had a significant impact on those she came into contact with. She is loved by her five children and their spouses for her great wisdom, quiet way, endurance and humility. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's lives will be forever blessed by her faithful daily prayers for them.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16 at River Church, 459 E. Highland Ave., Redlands. Private family burial will take place at 9:30 a.m. at Hillside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made either to Redlands Christian School, 1145 Church Street, Redlands or Mexican Christian Children's Aid, P O Box 9931, Redlands, 92375.
