Benton Satterfield Obituary

Benton Sapp Satterfield

RALEIGH - Dr. Benton Sapp Satterfield died Monday, December 14, 2015 in his beloved home in Raleigh.

He was in medical practice for over 47 years - and loved every minute of it. He reluctantly retired in 2013, after delivering more than 5,000 babies. He could hardly go anywhere in the Triangle Area without running into his patients or children he delivered. He was delighted whenever patients spoke to him and was known for his big bear hugs that left the lingering scent of Old Spice aftershave. Doc B - as he was known by those who loved him - has been said by many to be one of the kindest men they have ever met, with the most genuine bedside manners of any physician, and the last of the true Southern gentleman. He always had a listening ear and a caring demeanor and was incredibly appreciative for even the smallest of gestures. Doc B was deeply loyal and passionate about everything NC State - red was definitely his favorite color. He loved hunting, God and Edenton Street United Methodist Church - but he was never happier than when surrounded by his family.

A native of Raleigh - and the son of G. Howard and Aleece Satterfield, he graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School (1954), then NC State University (1958), and then Duke University Medical School in 1962 (though he still pulled for NCSU over Duke) and completed his residency at the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1966-1968.

Emma Garnett Hix was the love of his life. He met and married her while in residency at MCV and he was her rock for 52 years. His five children meant the world to him - and he also treated his four daughter-in-laws and his son-in-law as if they were also his own flesh-and-blood. He was thrilled with the birth of all of his 13 grandchildren - and was a comforting resource for all those new mothers. Many grandbabies slept comfortably on his broad chest, and he and Emma Garnett attended and enjoyed countless school events, as well as soccer, baseball and basketball games, plays and even swim meets!

To Doc B, the greatest gift of all was for he and Emma Garnett to be surrounded by his children and grandchildren - Benton, Jr. and his wife Beth of Cary; and their children Benton, III, Shaw, Carter and Walker; Dr. Robert (Bob) and his wife Jessica of Wilson; and their children Emma Townsend and Daniel; Carson Satterfield and her husband David Askew of Raleigh; and their children Coley and Dylan; Dr. Bill and his wife Vera of Winston-Salem; and their children Emma Stuart, Harper and Harrison; Bart and his wife Judy of Greenville, NC and their children Katie and Thomas. As well as their exchange student and "adopted daughter" Olga-Lucia Herrera from Colombia, South America, and now of Spokane, WA.

He also has many nieces and nephews all of whom he treated as if they were his own children. He was pre-deceased by his brother Dr. Howard Satterfield (OB/GYN).

Doc B was the kind of father and friend we would all hope to have and be. His generous and gentle nature, and deep appreciation for life, will live on in our hearts and memories forever.

The family expresses thanks to Doc B's caregiver for the past year - Peggy King. She also was charmed by Doc B - and the feeling was mutual. He was grateful for her help, especially for making it possible for him to make trips to his beloved beach house at Ocean Isle Beach, to the Rex Wellness Center and for some of his basic necessities of life - coffee with lots of creamer and friendship.

A Celebration of Doc B's life will be held on Thursday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh. Visitation will immediately follow the service in Kerr Fellowship Hall at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the G. Howard Satterfield Scholarship in Chemistry at NCSU (NC State College of Sciences Foundation, Campus Box 8118, Raleigh, NC 27695), Edenton Street UMC (228 West Edenton Street, Raleigh, NC 27603), or The American Red Cross of the Triangle (100 N Peartree Lane, Raleigh, NC 27610).

I just heard of the loss of a kind and humorous gentleman. Please express my sincere condolences to Emma Garnet, Bill and the rest of the family. As a young married couple, Emma Garnett and Benton were great role models, sounding boards and helped us remember to keep laughter in our marriage. I am sure that he and Dr. Louis Wilkerson are discussing UNC and NCSU basketball as we speak. Sincerely, Lyn and Phil Triplett

Dr. B was the best doctor I have ever had. Not only did he know medicine...he knew people. Most places make you feel like a check on their checklist. Dr. B made you feel like you were the most important person in the room. Carson, I knew you best and wish I could give you a hug. Although I did not personally know the rest of you, I do feel that I know you through all of the pictures and stories your dad and husband shared over the years. I will keep all of you in my prayers.

Dr. B was my Dr. , my friend and often my salvation for over 40 years. I loved him as such and am so saddened by his death. I all seems so unfair. He had just begun to enjoy that time in his life when he could finally devote his time towards all the loving rewards he had so earned and deserved. I am glad that he is at peace with God but am going to miss his presence on this earth. To Carson and all his family I wish you PEACE as well and I will pray for your hearts to heal. God bless this WONDERFUL man.

Dr. B. literally saved my life. After the birth of my son via c-section I started running extremely high fevers. The nurses would not listen to me. Finally Dr. Satterfield came in the room and found me crying. He asked me what was wrong and I told him I was dying and no one would listen to me. He listened and even though the area of the c- section was not red he opened it up. The worse green stuff gushed out...it was gangrene. He acted so fast and he made me feel save. Later he said I would have died.

He was my hero for ever more! He was a great physician. God bless his family.

Prayers for the loss of a wonderful Dr. I have known Dr. B since the late 60's. I was a Rex Student Nurse, then employee.
He was a mentor and became my OB, along with Dr. Courie, who delivered my wonderful children.
Being a huge NC State fan, I often encountered him at home games.

To the Satterfield family: I am deeply sorry for your loss. Dr. Satterfield was somewhat of a mentor to me early in my career as an OB/GYN and I nearly joined him in practice back in 1994. I developed a relationship with him then but we lost touch over the years since I practiced in Cary.
I ran into him recently while out at dinner and two days later paid him a visit. We spent a nice afternoon together talking about the good old days of medicine. He also spoke a lot about how proud he was of his family. I had planned to return this week and bring him a Christmas present.
He is a real legend in Raleigh medical lore and there will never be another one like quite him. He had a true love of and dedication to his patients. He will forever be one of my most revered role models in medicine. Blessings on the Satterfield family during this difficult time.

Dr. Satterfield, known by all as a loving husband and father as well as a caring physician will be missed. As a member of the community even with all of his personal and career commitments he found time to serve those in need. One of the ways that was of importance to him was his volunteer leadership with the local Red Cross chapter.

Over 45 years ago he started his involvement with the Red Cross by joining the Board of Director, for what was then the Wake County Chapter. He was instrumental in the chapter's decision and ability to move to its new building, in 1973, which is the current location still today of 100 Peartree Lane. This was possible only though extensive fundraising and planning efforts and as Chair elect Benton played a key role.

Dr. Satterfield served as Board Chair from 1973 to 1976 and never relinquished being a volunteer and donor for the remainder of his life. His dedication, service and support over the many years was recognized and honored when he was voted a Lifetime Membership to the Board of Directors in 2011.

Dr. Benton Satterfield, a man of many passions and loves in his life. May each of us carry his spirit of generosity and commitment to serve others forward in our lives and thereby honor him.

To his family, and especially to Carson, whom I know the best, please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.
