Albert "Sonny" Smith, 80, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 9, 2021 in his home with his family by his side. He was the loving husband of Donna M. (Sileo) Smith for 53 years. Al was born December 30, 1940 in Torrington, CT to the late Albert and Irene (Josza) Smith. He was the older brother of Marjorie (Smith) Zander, and Diane (Van Deusen) Hannah.
Al attended Torrington High School and proudly served in the United States Air Force at Ellington Air Force Base in Texas. Upon returning home to Connecticut, he met Donna Sileo and her two daughters, Marie and Barbara. They would marry in 1967, and Al would adopt the girls as his own. The family would move to Meadow St. in Winsted, CT where he would reside until his passing. Al worked for Dwan Distributors in Torrington, and did a small stint at the Southern New England Telephone Company before landing at the Town of Winchester Public Works Department, where he would spend the next 37 years taking care of the town, and the people he loved. In that same manner, he also joined the Engine 4 Fire Department, to protect them as well. The birth of his sons gave him a chance to become a Pee Wee Sports coach, where he made multitudes of lifelong friends with the Engine 4 Pee Wee Pirates and Pop Warner Football teams. Al was a big sports fan, enjoying the New York Yankees, New York Football Giants, and NASCAR. However, in his later years, he loved his UCONN Lady Huskies. Their unending pursuit of precision passing and unselfish play reminded him of the way the game was once, and, to him, should always be played. Al was a collector. Toy cars. Baseball Cards. Basketball Cards. Football Cards. Autographs. Coins. He loved the history and mystery of such collections. A child of the 1940's and '50's, loved old time Rock and Roll. He was a big Elvis Presley fan, and, having spent his time in the service at a Texas location, he loved the old blues guitar slingers. Al had a collection of 45 records that he talked about which contained "rare and priceless" Beatles singles, still in their sleeves, and in mint condition. (He would profess his constant admiration for Paul McCartney and his unparalleled musicianship.) Many years went by without those classic records of his ever surfacing...until now. They are truly breathtakingly beautiful. He was always a collector. Besides his loving wife, Donna, Al is survived by his children, Marie Schapp of Goshen, CT, Barbara Ferrari and her husband Bruce of Smithville, AR, Joseph Smith of Winsted, CT and Shawn Smith and his wife Jennifer of Barkhamsted, CT. He was the proud Grandpa of Ambyr (Petersen) Domonell and her husband Justin of New Hartford, CT, Brandon Ferrari and his wife Jackie of St. Petersburg, FL, Chase Dill of Torrington, CT, and Jacob Smith of New Hartford, CT, as well as the joyous Great-Grandpa of Jasper and Griffin Domonell of New Hartford, CT. A celebration of his life will begin at 4pm at The Gilson Cafe and Cinema in Winsted,CT on Thursday, April 15, 2021. Montano-Shea Funeral Home, Winsted has care of the arrangements.
