Marol Ann Dellinger

March 29, 1935 - June 22, 2014

Marol Dellinger, loving and caring wife of former University of Oregon men's track and field and cross country coach, Bill Dellinger, passed away on June 22, 2014 due to complications from cancer and respiratory illness. She was 79.

Born Marilyn Ann Alpaugh to Steven and Mary Alpaugh in Williston, North Dakota on March 29, 1935, she was one of four daughters, including her identical twin sister, Mardelle Willis (Vancouver, WA); Kathy Capanna (Springfield, OR); and Doreen Cunningham (Eugene, OR), who preceded her in death.

Marol was especially close to her twin sister, sharing a special bond that is only known to twins.

Marol moved with her family from North Dakota to the Pacific Northwest in 1941, living briefly in Camas, Washington before settling down in St, Helens, Oregon. She was very involved in high school activities and was voted prom queen, graduating from St. Helens High in 1953.

Marol moved to the Eugene/Springfield area in 1955, and worked as a licensed massage therapist and gym instructor. She met and married Jack. W. Burknum (deceased) and they had three children: Mary Lou Breckel (Walterville, OR); David Wright Bucknum, Sr. (Eugene) and Daniel Wright Bucknum, who preceded her in death.

Marol later worked at the Veteran's Memorial Building -- better known as the Vet's Club -- for 12 years. It was there she met and fell in love with her future husband, Bill, in 1972. They were best friends for years and got married on July 25, 1987.

From the day Marol and Bill met, they were an unstoppable team. They truly deserved a gold medal for going the distance; a 42 year friendship and nearly 30 years of marriage.

Marol loved and cherished the many athletes that Bill recruited to Oregon, always going out of her way to tend to their needs, whether it was flipping pancakes for the hungry runners during their annual cross country training camp at Odell Lake or providing an sympathetic ear to their troubles.

Marol was a lovely, warm and inspiring woman, who always made time for anyone that needed her. Her bright spirit, effervescent smile and determination to tackle the biggest projects with all of her might earned her the respect and admiration of everyone who was fortunate to enough to cross her path.

An avid outdoors woman, Marol loved to fish and would catch her share of every kind from Alaskan salmon to bass from the local ponds.

She enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Springfield Country Club. She and Bill were both big fans of the New York Yankees, rarely missing a game on TV, and even attending a few in person.

She had many cherished friends and felt family were her most precious gifts.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Lou Breckel; a son David Wright Bucknum, Sr.; her three stepsons Dave, Dan and Joe Dellinger; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to:
