John "Bob" Robert Auld Jr.

April 23, 1951 -

February 27, 2018

J. Robert "Bob" Auld, 66, died February 27, 2018 in Eugene. Born on April 23, 1951, he was the son of John Robert Auld and Lois Geraldine Sorbel Auld.

He attended North Eugene High School and graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in business in 1974.

He began his business career in Portland as a salesman for Armour-Star in 1975. In 1978, Bob became a lumber broker for Furman Lumber Company, eventually rising to vice-president in 1988. He spent the next 22 years, as a partner, first with Guitteau-Newland Lumber Co., then with McKenzie River Trading Company and Hearin Forest Industries in Eugene.

Bob was a lifetime Oregon resident and was passionate about the beauty of his home state. The lumber business for Bob was a natural continuum. He was the grandson of Henry Carroll Auld who started the Mohawk Lumber Co in 1906. He especially enjoyed the Westfir area and the Oregon coast, and learned all the back roads from his father, John Auld, a one-time logger.

From an early age, Bob was an enthusiastic sports fan. As a boy he collected and traded baseball cards, cataloging to memory the player's performance and history.

A sports statistician at heart, Bob could state facts from memory about Oregon football players including their hometowns, high schools, graduation dates and all relevant performance data.

A lifetime Duck fan, Bob especially loved University of Oregon basketball and football. On several occasions Bob was able to sneak into post-game locker rooms or get onto the team sideline without getting caught. He was so excited, he once unintentionally knocked down a player running out onto the field before a home game. On one occasion he lined up on the field before a football game with past lettermen wearing a herringbone overcoat, fedora and smoking a large cigar.

Bob is survived by his beloved partner, Debi Long. Also surviving him are six siblings: Susan Petty of Concord, CA; Sarah Auld (Tom) of Portland, ME; Michael Auld (Tina) of Eugene; Mary Jo Newcomer (Brad) of Renton, WA, Richard Auld of Portland, OR and Thomas Auld of Eugene.

His greatest legacy may be his 13 nieces and nephews who all adored him: John, Katie, Sarah, David, Andrea, Ashley, Christopher, Daniel, Rachel, Alexander, Clare, Wren and Wudinesh. He was known to them all affectionately as Ol' Handsome, Uncle Poopsie and/or Uncle Buck.

A lively storyteller, with a sly sense of humor, Bob was a great listener, a generous spirit, and a treasured member of the Eugene community. He will be missed by all.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 17th from 2 to 5, in The Club Room at Autzen Stadium.
