Chuck Kleinhans [Charles Nelson Kleinhans], film scholar and activist, died of heart failure on Dec. 14 in Eugene, Oregon. He was co-editor of the online film magazine, Jump Cut: A Review of Contemporary Media, along with his wife Julia Lesage. Generations of film scholars, historians, activists and critics have lost a devoted mentor and astute reader-editor. Chuck was Associate Professor Emeritus in the Radio/Television/Film Department, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, where he served from 1977 to 2009. The courses he taught over those decades say much: microcomputer graphics, film and video making, media literacy, popular culture, experimental and documentary film/video, Hollywood cinema, digital culture, cross-cultural media. He was dissertation advisor to forty-three Northwestern doctoral graduates. His passing has been mourned worldwide in a Chuck Kleinhans Tributes page on Facebook.
He is survived by his spouse, Julia Lesage; sister, Christine Robins (spouse Patricia Parcells); and brother, James Kleinhans. The family would welcome contributions in Chuck's name to your local Planned Parenthood, which Chuck has long supported. A memorial will be held in Eugene in the summer.
