Terry Maddox
2/16/1934 - 1/24/2021
Terry Maddox passed away Sunday, January 24, 2021 in the loving care of his family.
Terry was born on February 16, 1934 in Sandy, OR, where his parents, Zita and Rupert Maddox had traveled there from southern Oregon to pick cherries. He was the 5th of 8 children. He grew up on a ranch near Jacksonville, Oregon. He attended schools in Jacksonville and Medford, followed by his college years at the University of Oregon. Terry played baseball for the Oregon Ducks from 1954 through 1957, and following a stint in the Army, several years of minor-league pro-ball. During this time, Terry met the love of his life Shirley (Dudley) Maddox after an arranged blind date by Shirley's cousin Pat who was married to Terry's brother Rupert (Bud). Terry and Shirley were married 64 years.
Terry and Shirley moved to San Francisco when Terry was drafted into the Military. Two of their five children were born there. The couple returned to Oregon settling in Eugene. Three more children arrived to complete the family. Terry taught 30 years in the Springfield School District where he was head baseball coach at Springfield High School. He taught evening classes in Geology at Lane Community College. While doodling on his note pad during a teacher refresher course, a colleague was impressed with his work. In his forty's he began sketching pencil drawings where he created hundreds of one of a kind outdoor and wildlife pictures. Terry and Shirley enjoyed years of traveling together to Art shows throughout the country.
Terry loved to watch his children and grandchildren play sports and other activities. He was an avid fan of all the Oregon Ducks sports teams.
Terry is survived by his wife Shirley Maddox, his sons Chris (Jackie), Fred (Misa) and Mike (Heather) Maddox and daughters Karen (Forrest) Burger and Jan (Greg) Price, sisters Kareen Powell, Zita Smith and Diane Walker, 13 Grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
