Samuel Hyrum Winters, 86, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at his home in St. Anthony surrounded by his family.
Sam was born July 25, 1927, in Chester, Idaho, the son of Thomas Erving Winters and Beatrice Campbell Winters. He grew up in the Chester area, where he attended elementary school and attended high school in St. Anthony. He quit high school to volunteer for military service in the U.S. Army at age 17. He re-enlisted and was sent to Korea, where he was injured in action on Sept. 18, 1950. He was honorably discharged on June 9, 1952.
He married Marlene "Molly" Rae Smith, of Ashton, on March 9, 1953, in St. Anthony. They made their home in St. Anthony, where they have lived since. They went south for the winters. Sam enjoyed camping, fishing and whittling wood. Most important to him was spending time with his family.
Sam worked for Yellowstone Park for several years and ran heavy equipment. He retired from the Fremont County Road and Bridge.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene "Molly" and a daughter, Shawna (Scott) Mace, both of St. Anthony; a son, Rondo Winters, of Rexburg, Idaho; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Vollie Winters and two brothers, Bill and Theron Winters and a daughter-in-law, Michele Winters.
