Shirley R. Oar
February 13, 1938
November 8, 2013
Shirley R. Oar was born on February 13, 1938 in Winnemucca, Nevada, and died peacefully in her sleep on November 8, 2013 at her home in Portola, California, after several years of surviving breast cancer.
Shirley was the ninth out of eleven Albee children, and a fourth generation Renoite. She fostered newborns for adoption for many years while her children were growing up. At 50, she studied and became a substance abuse counselor until her retirement, when she moved to her sanctuary in the midst of the trees in Portola. She loved her hobbies of cross-stitching, knitting, and art projects. Her biggest joy was her family, and their offspring. Shirley's compassion and free-loving spirit will be greatly missed by all who had the fortune of knowing her.
She is survived by Louis B. Oar, her husband and high school sweetheart of 58 years, and her four children, Donald (Shirley) Oar, Tammera (Malcolm) Wong, Richard (Teresa) Oar, and Jeannie Lagorio, 9 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren; and her siblings, Sister Dorothy Albee, Sidney Albee, Rosalie Albee-Field, and William Albee, numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a viewing on Friday, November 15, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Walton's Funeral Home, 875 West Second Street, followed by a rosary to be led by Deacon Joe Bell at 7:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, November 16, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral on Second Street, by Father Arlon Vergara and Deacon Joe Bell. In lieu of flowers, Shirley desired that donations be made to St. Judes and/or Hospice of Truckee, California.

My Grandmother's laugh was raw and contagious. Her laugh reflected her spirit. I know very few people who laugh not because something funny is happening but because in that moment he or she is truly happy. Grandma was one of the very first people I was around who laughed in those moments. She took in this world accepting both the good and the bad. That is also how she loved. She lived her life the way I hope to live the rest of mine, embracing the moments that make me truly happy.

I especially remember Shirley's smile and hospitality. We shared a love for family history and pictures and I am so happy to call her friend as well as cousin! Cancer claimed her body but it never could squelch her spirit. She has earned her rest...well done good and faithful servant! Now rest in peace.

My Heart is with all of you in this time of sorrow. Aunt Shirley will forever be in my heart and her memories will always be with me. Her spirit, her drive, her laughter, and her love for her family is what I will miss. She was a great example of strength, and how to never give up ,and make the most of each day you have here on earth. My love to you all.
