Salvador "Sal" Ruiz

Born in Yahualica, Mexico to Epitacio and Petra Ruiz, Salvador came to Sparks when he was 3 ultimately graduating from Sparks High School in 1945. He then worked for Southern Pacific Railroad, served in the US Army during the Korean War, and attended UNR on the GI bill graduating in 1958. Subsequently, he earned a Masters Degree from Mexico City University. A life-long educator, Sal taught at Reno High School and was a member of the first faculty of Wooster High School. Later he served as principal for Gerlach Empire Schools then Smithridge, Rita Cannon and Greenbrae Elementary Schools retiring in 1988. Though Sal's primary service organization affiliation was with the Plumb Lane Lions Club (serving as District governor in 1989-90), he belonged to several professional educational organizations, officiated high school football for 35 years, was a long-time member of Toastmasters and recently a member of "SAVE", a police auxiliary organization. Sal was also a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Community.

Doris Dulgar Ruiz, Sal's wife of 46 years who survives him, and he enjoyed many years of traveling all over the world. Additional survivors include three daughters Mimi Ruiz (David Taft) of San Francisco CA, Marion Kessler (Bart Kessler) of Portland OR, Jeanelle Ruiz Ebanks of Henderson NV and Grandson Daniel Kessler of Seattle WA, Granddaughters Elayna and Elizabeth Ebanks of Henderson NV. His siblings Leo Ruiz and Irene Elsrode (Harry Elsrode) both of Reno and their children and grandchildren also survive him.

Funeral Mass 2pm Wed., March 6, Holy Cross Catholic Community, 5650 Vista Blvd. Sparks.

Followed by burial at Sierra Memorial Gardens. Reception to follow at Johnny's Ristorante Italiano, 4245 W 4th St. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Washoe County Lions Sight Conservation Committee, PO Box 11935, Reno NV 89510.
