Alice Getto Obituary

Alice Etchart Getto

Sparks - Alice Rose Etchart was born on August 31, 1926 in Winnemucca, Nevada. She was a first-generation Nevadan after her parents, Peter and Marianne Etchart, immigrated from the Basque country. Their journey showed her that hard work and determination could create a better life. This foundation was the basis for her lifetime of accomplishments.

Alice attended Humboldt County High School where she was an Honor Roll student receiving many academic awards and scholarships. She was active in various clubs and organizations. From music and sports to foreign language and debate, Alice's interests were diverse.

Alice attended the University of Nevada. She was the first in her family to go to college and earn a degree. She was the president of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and recently received the distinguished 75 year membership award. As a result of her varied attributes, she earned the honor of becoming one of the first female editors of the Artemesia yearbook. Alice graduated with honors and was awarded Phi Kapa Phi distinction.

In August of 1950, Alice married to George Getto of Sparks, Nevada. They had two daughters, Carole and Janet. Alice was employed by the Washoe County School district as a teacher for over thirty years. She learned to balance her love of family with her love of teaching. Alice was a pioneer of education who was selected to create an experimental program. She was chosen to launch "the open classroom" because of her academic expertise, her passion for teaching, and her outgoing personality. Alice was beloved by her students, touching many lives throughout her career.

Alice was an avid gardener whose outdoor space was a profusion of color and blooms. As an enthusiastic hostess known for outdoor parties and holiday gatherings, she seamlessly joined family and friends. Alice was a mother and grandmother who was adored by her family. A fixture in their lives, she never missed an opportunity to connect with her children and grandchildren. Whether it be attending games, cooking hotcakes, or helping with schoolwork, Alice was a constant source of support. Always happy, upbeat, and fun, her company was enjoyed by all. She was a truly a role model for those who knew her.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband George, her parents Peter and Marianne, her brother Pete and sister Grace. She is survived by her daughters Carole Gardner (Mitch) and Janet Lundy (Dave), her five grandchildren Adrienne Sprowls (Scott), Greg Gardner (Monica), Alex Gardner (Jane), Matthew Lundy (Katey), and Bradley Lundy (Sarah). Alice's long life allowed her to experience the joy of 5 great grandchildren. Alice was cherished by her family and friends and will be dearly missed.

I loved Mrs Getto, my favorite teacher at Smithridge for grades 4, 5 and 6 in the first `open classroom´. I worked so hard to impress her with my weekly contracts!! She encouraged me to do my best and she made me smile. I found in her a true friend.

Dear Carole, Janet and Family, What a blessing your dear mom was to all of us who had the opportunity to meet and enjoy her warm and loving outreach into our community and beyond. She was a mentor to me 50 years ago when I started my music studio here and in my memory a pure joy and support. Please know you are all in my prayers even after this period of time. I hope you will gain comfort from us who were touched by her exemplary life. Special love to you all,
Deidre (nee Roberts) Smith
