Donald Kerr Obituary

Donald E. Kerr

June 5, 1938

Aug. 7, 2015

On August 7, 2015, God welcomed Donald Edwin Kerr (Don) to his home in heaven. He was 77 years old and died peacefully in his sleep at home. Don had battled multiple medical conditions for 12 years.

He was born June 5, 1938 in Dayton, Ohio to Donna Esther Schonfelt and Kenneth Littleton Kerr. He was the third of four children, Kenneth, Jr., Joyce and Debbie.

He had fond memories of his childhood and spoke of it often. One of his favorite stories was how his brother threw him off a bridge into a pond to teach him how to swim. He not only became an excellent swimmer, but as a teenager earned extra money being a life guard at Silver Lake.

He graduated from Tecumseh High School, Class of 1956, in New Carlisle, Ohio, and attended Miami University before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Bremerhaven, Germany, where he was a radio intercept operator. He proudly served his country for four years.

He was an entrepreneur that enjoyed change. He owned the Hertz Rent-a-Car franchise in Reno, Stateline and Stockton, CA. Upon the sale of that franchise, he became a wholesale car dealer in California. From there he became a partner in a Burger King franchise in Cleveland, Ohio. He and Sandy spent six years in Cleveland, returned to Reno, NV and purchased Super Sam's Pizza. Growing tired of the restaurant business, he sold Super Sam's and began providing accounting services to several used car dealers. In 2008 he retired.

He and his wife Sandy were married October 30, 1980. Each brought children to the marriage and an amazing family grew. He was predeceased by his mother, father, his two sisters and a nephew. He is survived by his wife, Sandy, daughter Doris (Michael) Boka, sons Jeffery, Cameron and Paul Kerr, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Don had the ability to nurture and did so willing. He was a father figure to numerous others. He was a life time member of the Reno SKAL Club and a member of Reno South Rotary.

He cherished his family which included his cats and dog, and loved God with all his heart. He will be missed and remembered.

Viewing hours are scheduled for Sunday, August 16th from 4pm - 7pm at Walton Funeral Home, 875 W. 2nd Street, Reno. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 17th at 10:30 am at St. John's Presbyterian Church, 1070 W. Plumb Ln., Reno. Private burial will be held at Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery.

Memorial donations are suggested to Food Bank of Northern Nevada,550 Italy Drive McCarran, NV 89434 or Reno/Sparks Gospel Mission, P.O. Box 5956, Reno, NV 89513-5956.

In loving memory of a wonderful person. We will love you and miss you always. Words can not express the gratitude I have for just knowing such a great man and beig my friend. The world lost a good one here. Even though distance between us has separated us thru the years you were never forgotten and always thought about. You are a dear friend. My only wish was to been able to say goodbye. You rest in peace till we meet again my dear friend. My heart hurts. I'm so broken. Goodbye for now pal.
