James Rex Smith was born in Salina, Kansas on April 13, 1921. He passed away June 6, 2014. He attended Philips University, where he met his wife, Marie Kingsbury. He then attended Yale Divinity School and served in Korea at Po Hang as a Naval Chaplain for the Marines. Later, he attended USC and received a PHD in Sociology, then becoming a full proffer at California State University at Fullerton.

He is survived by his two daughters, Sheryl and Kandyce and 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, June 15, 2014 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Ross, Burke and Knobel Mortuary, 2155 Kietzke Lane, Reno. A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 16, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Mt. View Cemetery, 435 Stoker Ave., Reno.
