Raymond Pezonella Obituary

Raymond Michael Pezonella

Reno - Raymond Michael Pezonella was born on September 18, 1948 in San Francisco, California and passed away on May 16, 2021 at Renown Hospital in Reno, Nevada. He graduated from UNR with a degree in civil engineering and was married to his sweetheart Nancy for 53 years. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Ray was a man of faith, strong in his convictions and a great humanitarian. But perhaps his greatest pleasures in life were raising his four children, spending time spoiling his nine grandchildren and watching them all play sports, even if it was a video when he was not able to attend in person. He was a successful businessman owning his own engineering firm, Pezonella and Associates, for over 40 years before finally retiring in 2019.

Ray attended the Trinity Episcopal Church and never met an organization he did not want to be involved with or in charge of. He had a great compassion for those who were less fortunate and he firmly believed in always giving back to your community. While Ray was a member of too many organizations and clubs to list individually, he was most heavily involved with the Lions Club, EAR and Optimist Club of Reno holding all club offices all the way to District Governors.

He had a love of animals, sports and the youth. He had a special love for football, both as a fan of the Oakland Raiders and as a coach, coaching teams from Pop Warner all the way to high school as well as the semi-pro team, the Pyro Pigs. He made many contributions to the community including lights for several local football fields and many park improvements through his work with the Lions Club. The community is a better place because of Ray and his charitable service.

Ray also "moonlighted" as a chauffeur driving the bus with 45 eager campers heading to Camp Dat So La Lee every summer in the beautiful Ruby Mountains outside of Elko, Nevada; driving the bus to Point Bonita, California for the 8th graders of St. Albert's Catholic School; and driving the bus for Spanish Springs Cougars football and also coaching them to many victories.

He was truly a larger than life man who had the gift of making you feel safe, important and loved. He had a soft spot for children and was always involved with something that was helping them. Once you met Ray you were a friend for life. This was experienced by many of the exchange students his family hosted from Italy that he still kept in touch with.

Ray was happiest when he was helping others and he always had a word of encouragement. He might be best known for his incredible work ethic, his large heart and ever present mustache. When he would DJ events he was known as "The Big Bopper" and his love of music was a lifelong passion.

Ray loved spending time with family and friends and this included time on his boat and in his Beech Craft Baron airplane enjoying God's wonders. Ray is survived by his wife Nancy and children Michael (wife Kim and sons Niko and Jake), Rayann (husband Tod and sons Raymond and Matthew), Christina (husband Mark and daughter Abigail) and Julie (husband Wesley and sons Weston, Lucas and Quinton and daughter Olivia) as well as several in-laws, nieces and nephews.

The Celebration of Life for Ray will be held at the Boys and Girls Club at 1300 Foster Drive in Reno, Nevada on Sunday, June 6th at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ray's honor can be made to the Capital Campaign Fund - Faith Like a River, at Trinity Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 2246, Reno, NV 89505-1815.

I remember when we were in College at Heald Engineering College in San Francisco in 1966 thru 1969 and when Pez married Nancy in 1968 and commuted to school each day.

I worked with Ray for over 30 years. He did Phase-I site assessments for my commercial clients. We lived working with him and so did my clients. Blessings to your family during this time of sadness. Just know we all saw his light shine when doing business with him.

Meet Ray once and he would make you feel like a lifelong friend. Meet Ray a few more times and he would make you feel like family. I was lucky enough to grow up around Ray as an extended family member during my childhood and his influence on me was a positive and long lasting one. - I am grateful to have known Ray and the Pezonella’s, as well as all the great memories surrounding them. My condolences to the family, love you guys!

Ray and I met on the Board of High Sierra Industries over 30 years ago. He was always so kind to me and had the respect of everyone. We recently served on the Board of JUSTin Hope Foundation together because I personally asked Ray for his wisdom and passion. I think Ray had a hard time saying no to anyone which is why he was so involved in our community. I often saw Ray at kid sporting events - I don't know how he did it - I can only imagine what an incredible husband, father and grandfather he was. I will miss you Ray - you always made others feel good and you always had my vote. Prayers...

Ray was a good man. I met him through his long service to the Reno Arch Lions Club. His biography mentions the bus which he drove each year to take a bus load of 8-9 year olds to and from the Lions Camp in the Lamoille Canyon, but it should be noted that, when transportation had become a problem, he bought the bus to fill the need! He served with distinction as the Lions District Governor for Nevada and was always welcomed as a friend by everyone attending a meeting.

As an accomplished professional engineer, he always assured that his staff were always ready. To his beloved Nancy, kids and family, I can only extend thanks for sharing this amiable bear with us.

Your family became a very close church family and we have long lasting,
fun memories in our hearts forever, always precipitating laughter;
our laugh lines started during this time.

One of these memories we would like to share.
Your family came over to enjoy a BBQ together.
It was time to eat and Ray decided to help Juile (then four) dish-up her plate. We hear Julie say to Ray, "What is that, Daddy?" Ray responds,
"That is BBQ'd chicken." Julie continues, I thought BBQ'd chicken was always burned." Rays response, "Be quiet, Julie!"

Your family is VERY special to us, everyone of you, forever.
Love Jerry, Ann, J.J. and Brad

My heart breaks. Raymond and I were best friends in high school and I can still hear Hattie yelling at us as we ran out of the house in Rohnert Park. I was his best man when he married Nancy who he adored. My prayers to Nancy and the family.

Ray was a special person always. He was also President of the Northern Nevada Builders Association at one time. Because of his involvement in NNBA, he built a strong association with Bob Jones and Ed Meagher. The three gentlemen spent every Monday going to lunch. They originally started at John Asquagas Oyster Bar and then the last few years ended up at the Gold Dust West. That was when they discussed their businesses, families and upcoming occasions in their lives. Ray always looked forward to those lunches. Ray was always good to Ed and I as a friend. He had a habit of looking out for everyone in his life to make sure everyone was doing great. Top of that list was always his family. Everyone that knew Ray will miss him terribly. He was a special friend to us and we will never forget this large of life man that came into our lives. Our prayers are with you and your family. Nancy - there is always a great woman behind every great man and he couldn't have done all that he did without your loving support. Eddie and I will miss you Ray.

Love You Cous. Will miss you until we meet again in His presence. Thank you for taking the time to visit as often as you did, for letting me barge into your work for an hours-worth of Family updates. Thank you for allowing Us to become closer as we watched each other's children grow up into responsible adults. Thank You for the tickets for all those Wolf Pack games! for the plane rides, the car rides, the all-u-can eat Feasts for charity, your generosity (along w/Nancy's) to my children, and now Their children. There won't ever be another like you, ever. As God has given us Gifts, you definitely made the most of yours while here on earth, and I'm sure as you were welcomed by His Angels into Heaven, our Savior was sure to have said, 'Well done my good and faithful servant.' I Love You Cous Ray. Thank you So much for all the memories you left us.
