Gretchen (Alfring) Hass

Gretchen (Alfring) Hass was born in Seattle, WA to Chris and George Alfring on June 16, 1941. She grew up in Los Angeles where she attended Garfield High School and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education from Cal State Los Angeles in 1963 and later a Masters' degree. Carl Hass became her husband in 1965. Their marriage lasted 46 years until his death in 2012. Montebello Unified School District was her employer for 25 years where Gretchen taught elementary grades. During that time, she worked on many innovative projects for the school district including the first elementary science lab in the district, first science fair in the district, a cooking program for K-2 grades and the first long distance running program for 4th graders. During the years she taught, Gretchen and Carl were blessed with son, David in 1970 and daughter, Christy in 1972. When Gretchen retired from teaching, they moved to Rocklin, CA where they ran a successful business. After retirement they became 'tax refugees' and moved to Reno in 2009. They happily became an active part of the community at Arrowcreek. After Carl's passing in 2012, Gretchen married Dale Nuszloch in 2016, after he swept her off her feet by clearing snow from her driveway. Dale and Gretchen enjoyed several years of creating memories through travel, golf, and togetherness.

During her life, Gretchen always tried to find something good or beautiful in every day. She was a volunteer (Girl Scout leader, team mom, Sunday school teacher, active in leadership in her political party, an officer of the ladies' golf in Arrowcreek and a faithful volunteer for Step 2 in Reno) and a generous contributor to many charities.

Actively fighting stage 4 cancer for three years, Gretchen was able to travel, golf, and enjoy a full life with Dale. She started to slow down in the fall of 2020. She passed into the arms of her loving Savior before dawn on March 18th, 2021, where she witnessed the sunrise in that land where there are no more tears.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Carl, sister Sally Rojas, and granddaughters Rose Emilia Hass and Annabelle Faith Hinrichs. She is survived by her husband Dale Nuszloch, son David (Tasha), daughter Christy Hinrichs (Fritz), and grandchildren Benjamin, Christian, Dante, Eloise and Fiona Hinrichs, as well as faithful Bichon Frisee, Macho Max.

Her greatest joy has been the love and accomplishments of her children and grandchildren.

If you wish to remember Gretchen, please make a contribution to your favorite charity or to Step 2 Reno or Reno Phil Youth Programs in her name as a remembrance of her generosity.

Gretchen was a wonderful friend and neighbor. We know that she is pain free and happy in a place that is full of the flowers that she enjoyed so much on this earth but we still miss her.
