John Richard McGathey, Sr.

John Richard McGathey, Sr. (Mayor of Poeville) passed away peacefully at Northern Nevada State Veterans Home June 4, 2020.

He was born in Dayton, Ohio on September 29, 1930 to John And Ruth McGathey. 1949 was a very eventful year for John. He graduated high school, married the love of his life, Lois Folk on September 27th and joined the United States Marine Corps and moved to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. John and Lois had four children John Jr.(Rick), Ellen, Chris, and Scott. In 1962 he was honorably discharged from the USMC and moved his family to Beavercreek, Ohio where he joined the Beavercreek Police Department. In 1979 John and Lois moved to Reno, NV on Peavine Mountain. He joined the Reno PD in1979 and left there in 1985 to become a Deputy Sheriff for Washoe County until he retired in 1997.

He loved his family and wanted his sons nearby. He lived life on his terms and loved Nevada and Peavine Mountain. He was a great Nevada historian and always had knowlegde to pass on to his family. He did everything from raising cattle to mining to building his dream home. He was a good man who is loved and will be greatly missed.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lois, daughter Ellen , and his parents John and Ruth McGathey.

He is survived by: sons, Rick (Barb) McGathey, Chris (Regina) McGathey and Scott (Kathi) McGathey; grandchildren Shon Fiege, Lori (Todd) Brown, Jason McGathey, April (Luke) Neumann, Sharon (Joshua) Maniscalco, and Samantha McGathey. He is also survived by 16 + great-grandchildren and 12 + great-great grandchildren.

Private memorial services will be held June 27, 2020 on Peavine Mountain. An open reception will follow at Sharon and Joshua Maniscalco's home after services approximately 1pm. For directions call 775-843-2933.
