Patrick Monaghan

Reno - Patrick Louis Monaghan passed away peacefully on August 5, 2018, at Rosewood Rehabilitation Center, after a long illness.

Patrick was born in Charles City, Iowa, on February 4th, 1952, to Bernard and Betty Monaghan. His family moved to Rancho Cordova, California, in 1960. After some college, he enlisted in the Army to pursue his goal of becoming a military policeman. He achieved his goal, and in the process received the National Defense Medal, as well as being classified as expert in rifle, pistol, and hand grenade. He was most proud of becoming a patrol dog handler and developed an inseparable bond with his dog, Bruno. He and Bruno served for one year together in Korea.

After his honorable discharge in 1974, he became a Nevada State Trooper. After two years as a Trooper he returned to California and became a Deputy Sheriff for Sacramento County. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Sheriff's Department and also obtained his Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Sacramento State University during his 15 years as a Deputy Sheriff.

Patrick was preceded in death by his father Bernard in 2014. He is survived by his mother Betty, brother Jeff (Patty) and nephews Bret, Ryan (Leigha), Kevin (Teeara), and several cousins.

The family would like to thank Dr. John Deweerd of the Reno VA for his many years of care and compassion.

Services will be held on September 7th at 1:30 PM at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Fernley, Nevada. A celebration of his life for family and friends will follow at the home of Jeff and Patty Monaghan. In lieu of flowers the family would like to ask that any donations be given to a veteran's organization of your choice.
