Stephen Ross Salerno

Reno - Born August 1, 1948 in Sacramento, CQ, Steve died peacefully December 27, 2020 at Renown Hospital.

He attended Robert H. Mitchell Elementary School in Sparks, E. Otis Vaughn Jr. High in Reno, and Earl Wooster High School in Reno, graduating in 1966.

Steve served in the United States Marine Corps from 1967 to 1973, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He remained a proud Marine for his entire life.

Known as "Big Sal", he was involved in numerous athletics and supported Notre Dame football, Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees. He was employed by Valley Concrete and was a well know bartender at various sports bars in Reno and Sparks.

He was predeceased by his parents, Geno Salerno and Julia Quilici Salerno, brother George Salerno and niece Elizabeth Salerno. He is survived by brothers, Larry (Louisa), Gene, Phillip, Bob (Diane), Jon (Sandi) and Tony, as well as sisters Daria Clark (Bill) and Juligene Scarnatti (Jim), uncle and aunt Bob and Carolyn Quilici and numerous nephews, nieces and friends.

A private graveside service was held for family on January 8, 2021 at Mt. View Cemetery.

I knew the Salernos when attending Otis Vaughn JH School Reno Nevada back in the 60s. We are also a large family and great to remember old friends and sad to hear of their loss. Where all getting up in age and prayers all our families stay safe. Jimmy Wilson

My heartfelt condolences to the Salerno family. Stephen was larger than life to us younger kids. Kind and genuine always. The entire family embraced kindness and joy as a lifestyle. I am gratefull I grew up with Jon , Toni and Julie. My love to them always.

My heart hurts right now I loved big sal he was my buddy no matter what side of the bar he was on you could see him from a mile away with that big warming smile all ways happy to see you boy the stories I could tell about us and his brothers Tony and Phil and of course Larry ill miss. You forever big sal thanks for all the memories rest in peace I love you frankie
