Clara Novella Sutton-McCreary Obituary
Dr. Clara Novella Sutton McCreary, 99, of Richmond, entered into eternal rest on January 9, 2019. Born in Penola, Virginia to the late Betty Davis Sutton and Richard Earl Sutton, she was the sister of four deceased brothers: Wilbur, Earl Valvin III, infant Richard and Dr. Charles Sutton, Sr. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Dr. Edward D. McCreary, Jr. and son-in-law, Rev. Dr. Wade Richmond. Married 68 years to her late husband, she served as First Lady of Westwood Baptist Church and Mount Carmel Baptist Church and interim First Lady at ten churches in Richmond and vicinity. Dr. Sutton-McCreary was Valedictorian of the Class of 1937 at Armstrong High School, an honors' graduate of the Class of 1941 at Virginia Union University and a recipient of the Masters' and Doctorate in Education degrees. As faculty member for 41 years at Virginia Union University, she served as Chair of the Mathematics Department and Coordinator of the Pre-Engineering Program. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Ministers' Wives and Ministers' Widows Fellowship of Richmond, Chamberlayne 390 Chapter of AARP, Treble Clef and Book Lovers' Club and various Seniors' Ministries. She leaves to mourn a daughter, Edwina Richmond; two nieces, Bertha Carter (Donald) and Attorney Rene Hicks; two nephews, Dr. Charles E. Sutton, Jr. (Deborah) and Dr. Charles R. McCreary, Jr. (Irene); three step-grandchildren; four great nephews; one great niece and a host of relatives and friends. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. The AKA Memorial Service will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, January 17 at Scott's Chapel, 116 E. Brookland Park Blvd. followed by the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, January 18, 2019 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 216 W. Leigh Street. Dr. James E. Leary, eulogist. Entombment Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Drs. Edward and Clara McCreary Endowed Scholarship Fund at Virginia Union University, 1500 N. Lombardy Street, Richmond, Virginia 23220.
