Edwin James Benedict, Jr., 63, died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, November 24, 2018 in Richmond, Virginia. E.J. was also known as Ed, Eggs, and, most dearly, as Papa EJ to his step-grandchildren. He was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation in 2000 and had recently survived his second heart attack. He was born in Greenwich, CT on April 9, 1955 and grew up in Stamford, CT. E.J. attended St. Luke's School and was a Boy Scout ,where he learned his lifelong lessons of helpfulness and loyalty. E.J. attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, majoring in history, and graduated in 1977. He was a member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity. E.J.'s work experiences were interesting and varied. He helped develop a video jukebox in Boston, was a valet to Stephen Tyler of Aerosmith on tour, worked for Truly Nolan in Florida, and Tidewater Preservation in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Most recently he was working in Savannah, Georgia, where he was a Project Supervisor for Landmark Preservation, restoring historic properties and structures. E.J. enjoyed listening to music and had a love of reading, learning, researching, and telling all who would listen what he knew. He was a handy man, working on many projects that kept him busy in his spare time. His favorite pastimes were spending time with the grandchildren and walking Smokey, his grand dog. Edwin, Jr. was preceded in death by his mother, Anne Bilder Benedict, and his father, Edwin James Benedict, Sr. He is survived by his sister, Barbara Anne Benedict; his wife of 24 years, Nancy Young Carter Benedict, and his extended step-family: Christopher Carter, Stephany Carter, and Zachary Carter of Richmond, VA; Thomas Carter, Lee Carter, Oliver Carter, and Charlotte Carter of Murrells Inlet, SC.
