Dr. Charles Doane Matthews Jr. 1926—2018
Dr. Charles Doane Matthews Jr., 92, died on Monday, August 20, 2018, at Kendal at Oberlin, an extended care facility in Oberlin, Ohio. Born in Birmingham, Michigan on June 24, 1926, to parents, Charles Doane Matthews, Sr. and Amanda Clark. He was the youngest of seven children. After graduating from Baldwin High School, he enlisted in the US Navy where he served until 1947. Charles married Barbara Jean White of Detroit, Michigan on June 28, 1947. He received his pre-Medical degree from Wayne State University in Detroit. In 1956, he earned his MD degree from the University of Buffalo in New York after which he moved to Chicago, where he completed his medical residency and internship at the University of Chicago. In 1957, he began his medical practice at the Field Clinic in Chicago. In 1965, with the aid of a GI grant, he went back to school to pursue a degree in Psychiatry. In 1968, he affiliated with Evanston Hospital where he taught and mentored Northwestern University medical students as well as established a highly regarded private practice. Charlie's wife, Barbara died October 24, 1993, after a battle with cancer. In April 1994, Charles married Nancy Coleman and moved to her home in Oberlin, Ohio. Charles and Nancy enjoyed reading, theater and the arts. They had the great fortune to travel to many wonderful places in the world as well as visiting their children and grandchildren in Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Utah and Colorado. Charles is survived by his wife, Nancy; their children and their spouses including, Mardon Matthews (Stephen) Blomgren, Mary Matthews Metallo, Amy Matthews Neuwirth, Doron Matthews (Michael) Kleinman, Charles Doane Matthews III, Rachel (Bruce) Brehm, and Ian Coleman (Anne Rose Kitagawa); as well as 17 grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. He also has many nieces and nephews.
The family is planning a celebration of Charles' life in Evanston from 2 to 5 p.m. June 23 2019, at the Women's Club of Evanston, 1702 Chicago Ave, Evanston, IL 60201.
