James Erickson Obituary

JAMES W. ERICKSON 'THE BIG SWEDE' ROCKFORD - Jim was born May 13, 1939, in Rockford to Lillian and Emil Erickson. He died Aug. 30, 2010, in SwedishAmerican Hospital. He graduated from East High School in 1957. Married Janice Zanocco on Nov. 21, 1959. He was employed by Smith Oil Co., in operations management for many years. He was a devout member of Holy Family Catholic Church. His conversion to Catholicism at age 20 strengthened his faith in God and sustained him throughout his life. He anticipated the day he could see the face of Christ. Jim will always be remembered for his love of coaching and working with youth in sports for Holy Family Blue baseball and the Ken Abraham Steelers football teams. He was also very proud of his Swedish heritage and referred to everyone he loved as a "big swede." His positive outlook on life inspired everyone he met. He always had a smile on his face and was concerned about others rather than himself. Jim loved life and above all, loved his family and his host of friends. He will be dearly missed. As he always said to his grandchildren, "See you later alligator, after while crocodile!" Survived by his loving wife, Janice; sons, Michael (Cheryl), John, Jeffrey and Paul; grandchildren, Kristen, Katie, Karolyn, Brittney and Christine; great-grandchild, Sofia; daughter-in-law, Patty; brother, Robert (Doris) Erickson; brother-in-law, Robert (Ann) Zanocco; sister-in-law, Carole (Dan) Burns; several nieces and nephews; and beloved grand-dog, Scruffy. Predeceased by parents; brother, Harold (LaVonne) Erickson; and sister, Janice Weber. A special thanks to the staff at SwedishAmerican Hospital, Dr. Joseph Ross and Dr. Robert Harner, Paula, Tammy and Fran. Mass of Resurrection at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, in Holy Family Catholic Church. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, in Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 1860 S. Mulford Road, with prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation also from noon Friday to time of service in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be established at a later date. Jan,
I am so sorry to here about Jim's passing. It has been many years since you and I worked together, but that is how I got to meet Jim and your boys. He was the kind of person who made you feel like he did really care. All of the testimonies written in this guest book are a real tribute to what kind of person he was.

My prayer is that your faith will help you and your family get through this tough time.

Dear Jan and Sons,
Tonight we witnessed a beautiful tribute to one of the nicest men we had the pleasure of knowing.
Due to the many friends showing their respect to the family, we tried not to take up too much of our personal time with you but we also wanted to mention that although our intention was to see you tomorrow at the funeral we regretfully cannot attend. Please know that our thoughts will be with you and you'll be remembered in our prayers.

I was so sorry to hear about the passing of "Uncle Jim". He was truly one of the nicest, sweetest man I have ever had the pleasure of having in my life growing up.He could light up a room the second he entered it. My prayers go out to the family of this wonderful man. Through thick and thin...and pain, he would always have a great big smile on his face that would light up a room in a matter of seconds.I love you all.~Teresa Siegrist-Sigala

The thoughts and prayers of the Appino family are with you at this time. It is with great fondness and respect that we remember the Big Swede. Everyone should have the opportunity to know at least one guy in their life with such a great sense of loyalty and devotion as Jim. I can picture him right now with his arm around St. Peter pointing to one of his grandkids and saying "do you see that Swede? Never a doubt!" May God bless and keep safe the Erickson and Zanocco families.
