VINCENT J. DANCA, 82 ROCKFORD - Vincent J. Danca, 82, of Rockford, died peacefully Friday, August 22, 2014, after a short battle with Lymphoma. Vince was born to Vincent and Jennie Danca in Lake Geneva, WI on August 3, 1932, and graduated from Lake Geneva High School in 1950. While serving in the Marine Corps, he had two tours of duty in Korea, receiving many medals for his service. Vince was forever grateful for the G.I. Bill, graduating from the University of Wisconsin in 1958, with a degree in journalism. He was employed by Ziff-Davis Publishing Co. in New York City from 1959-1962. On August 25, 1962, he married Judy Dornfeld in Madison, WI. Vince and Judy moved to Rockford in 1963, where Vince began his long career as a public school teacher. He taught at Lincoln Middle School from 1963-1969, and then English at East High School from 1969-1991. Vince also worked for WREX-TV as a weather forecaster from 1966-1986. He loved jazz music, playing the trumpet in RVC's Community Jazz Band, collecting big band music, and even publishing a jazz calendar from 1983-2003. Vince was a voracious reader, enjoying everything from the works of Shakespeare to the detailed accounts of WWII. He was also a member of the University of Wisconsin Alumni Association, Rockford Writer's Guild, Rockford Jazz Society, Holy Family Church and the H-3-1 Korean Battalion Group. He thoroughly enjoyed his mall-walker friends at Cherryvale and his Tuesday lunch group at Stockholm Inn. Vince loved a good joke and entertained many with his quick wit. We will miss him everyday and he will always be a "10" on the Danca Factor. Vince is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judy; their three children, Mary Ellen (Mike) Strandquist of Atlanta, Jim Danca and Nancy Alt of Rockford; six grandchildren, Natalie, Christian and Adam Strandquist, and Nolan, Graham and Emery Alt; and his faithful dog, Shadow. Vince was predeceased by his father, mother and sister, Josephine Danca. We want to thank Dr. Khan and Mike and Ellie from Transitions Hospice for their care and compassion in his final days. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, August 25, at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 26, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4401 Highcrest Rd., with visitation from 9:30 until 10:15 a.m. Tuesday in the church. Fr. Gerard Christianson officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or American Heart Association. Express online condolences at

His parents were wonderful people and so proud of Vince. I grew up across the back yard from them in Lake Geneva. I still use the pink jewelry box Jennie gave me for my 12th birthday, and the buffet she gave me when they moved. I always knew when Vince was visiting because he drove a red sports car, which I admired. I also felt watched his reports when I lived in Beloit in 1974-5. My condolences to his wife and children.

Mr.Danca was my drama teacher at Lincoln Jr. High School. He directed our play "Get Smart" where I played the double agent, Miss Finch. We had so much fun. He got me started in acting, and I went on to perform in many shows over my lifetime. He still remembered me when I would run into him over the years. What a GREAT guy! He will definitely be missed! Loved watching him on tv too. God bless him and hold his family close.

I was in Mr. Danca's Drama class as an 8th grader at Lincoln. Recall him as one of my favorite teachers in those years. In later years, was always a delight to see him on screen, as a TV weatherman. A calm, cheery and lighthearted presence. With condolences to his family.

Mr. Danca was my English teacher Soph year 1973 East High. We would tease him about the weather "Is it going to rain today Mr. Danca?" He always greeted us with his humor come rain or shine. A patient teacher who will not be forgotten - we all loved him & we were proud to have known him. RIP Kind Friend, thanks for sharing your wisdom with so many people. God Bless your Family.

R.I.P. Vincent were awesome on WREX and I hear that you were an even better teacher. Your son, Jim, with whom I went to Guilford with, was proof of what a wonderful father that you were.

Because of brave men like you, I have been able to live peacefully and make a decent living over here in Korea..............a nation that you and so many others put your lives on the line for.

I never knew Vince, but as a weather guy myself, I always appreciated his sunny disposition on TV. Condolences to family and friends. Vince spread his smile over the Rockford area during his air time on WREX-TV. And as a former teacher in that era as well, thanks, Vince, for being an educator. One of the most difficult, but rewarding, jobs a person can ever perform.

I am saddened to hear of Vince's passing. I had the honor of sitting in front of him in the RVC Jazz Ensemble for a great many years. I enjoyed our many conversations about Jazz, Jazz musicians, the trumpet, the saxophone, his calendar, and a lot of other subjects. I will always think of and remember Vince whenever on the bandstand. My thoughts are with you all.

I'm sure the Great Conductor in Heaven will find a chair for Vince next to Gabriel. He was the best man at our wedding in more ways than one.

When a mutual friend wrote to say
That dear Vince Danca had passed away.
I pulled his chapbook* from the shelf
And read his rhythms to myself.

I found within his work “Dog Days”
A verse that caught and held my gaze.
In different meter, different rhyme
His words ring true at this sad time:

“Now life is not capricious,
Nor is it set in stone;
And memory's there to help us share
The load when life has flown.”

*A Man's Best Friend Is His Doggerel

With fond memories of Vince and his wonderful sense of humor...
