Howard Abercrombie, 93, the loving, humble, and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather of the Abercrombie family, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2021 in the Lloyd Valley. Howard was born on the family ranch southeast of Tucumcari in 1927 to the late Robert and Nellie (Ayler) Abercrombie.
Howard or Harve as he was known had a strong work ethic. He spent his youth working on the ranch, and with his Daddy doing various jobs as the family survived during the Great Depression. He attended Tucumcari Schools until he was drafted in World War II during his senior year. He joined the US Army and was waiting to go to Japan for the invasion when the war ended.
In his words, "the little girl in my hometown had grown up and I started courting her." On July 5, 1953 , Juanita Farrow, who was raised four miles north of Harve's home, and Harve married. Their lovely homes (Tucumcari, Lincoln, Capitan, and Mogadishu ) were where the children and their friends knew the door was always open, and that all would find a loving and warm welcome and often delicious food prepared by Juanita and quite often grown by Harve. Juanita and Harve celebrated 50, then 60 years of marriage, and had reached 67 by the time Harve passed on April 6th. Harve was always dedicated to his church work, the precepts of the Masonic Lodge, and was very active in all school events in which the children and grandchildren were involved.
When he left the military he attended NMSU until graduation with a degree in Range Management. After working for the railroad he went to work for the Soil Conservation Service for many years. Harve enjoyed his work with the Quay County farmers and ranchers until his move to Lincoln County as the Resource Conservation and Development Coordinator. His last great job adventure before retiring was to move to Somalia, East Africa as the Project Coordinator for USAID. He always referred to this time as a million dollar vacation.
