WALTHOFF, Larry
Was born to Harm & Hazel Walthoff, on March 31, 1936, in Coloma, South Dakota. The family moved to Sacramento California, when he was 5 years old with his two younger brothers, Marlin & Charlie. He attended Grant Union High School, where he graduated in June 1954. He then enlisted in the Air Force on Oct 13, 1954. In 1957 Larry then met the love of his life, Joan Oltmer. He got married on March 7, 1957; and had four children. He was discharged from the Air Force in 1958. Larry then enlisted in the Reserves in March 1962 at McClellan AFB in California as a Chief and Flight engineer on C-119 aircraft. He then was recalled to active duty in October of 1962. Larry and Joan bought an old house on a 1/2 acre of property and built their dream home. He was an Air Reserve Technician in his civilian job and was a supervisor of the Scheduled Inspection Section for the 940th Air Refueling Group at Mather Air Force Base, California. And then in 1993 he retired. In between his work, raising his children, building his home, he found time to do what he enjoyed in life, riding his motorcycle, where he did many trips on and many camping trips with his family. Larry enjoyed life to the fullest. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joan Walthoff, children Debbie Young and James Walthoff, granddaughter Crystal Rista, grandsons, Christopher, Brandon, Nicholas, and Andrew Walthoff, great-grandchildren Jordyn, Alexis, Payton, Kennedy Rista, Carrisa, Brandon Jr, Hailey, and Jordan Walthoff. He was preceded in death by his dad, mother and grandson Brian. Service will be held on Friday January 11, 2013 at 10:00a.m. at Mount Vernon Memorial Park, 8201 Greenback Lane, Fair Oaks CA 95628

I'll have to add to what Gene said, Larry hired me in 1989 as an ART I had been a one of his reservist's starting in 1986. I even worked for Joanie for a little while I was between jobs. I always felt from the first day I reported in at Mather, Larry had invited me into his family and Joanie had seconded it. The Christmas cards and the letters with them were always worth waiting for each year. Judy and I will miss Larry.

Somehow, in a corner of our heads, we are still hoping that this isn't true. Losing you has created a void that could be never filled by another. We would never forget you grandpa. You will always be remembered, loved and missed by all of us. May God rest your wonderful soul in peace!
We love you.

Condolences go out to the Walthoff family. Larry was the person who hired me to his Aircraft Inspection Section in October 1977, Mather AFB, CA. I remained with this unit until retirement in December 2000. Thank you for believing in me and allowing me to have a successful and rewarding work career. He was one of the best persons I've known in my lifetime. You will be greatly missed. Gene Ponce & family, Bangkok, Thailand

Every year near Christmas we always looked forward to a Christmas card from Larry and Joanie, always early compared to my card to them. Always with a written note of things that they experienced the previous year. Larry was always special to me and a very gracious person. I always wanted to ride Harleys with him but I was working and he was having fun. A pretty busy guy after retirement raising a family and puppies, his other family, cute names for all. We moved away but still received the great card and letter every year. In the Reserve unit Larry was my boss and a good one at that, he treated everyone like a father and watched over all of us, just a great human being. I am sorry he is gone, I will never forget him. When I ride my Harley, it will be for him in my thoughts. TSGT Ed Whitson 940th ARG Mather/McClellan 1986-94
