Obituary

Brian George Smiley passed away on July 18, 2017, at his home in Sacramento, surrounded by family members, after a year-long fight against brain cancer (glioblastoma). Brian was born on December 12, 1965, to George and Joan Smiley and was raised in Orange County, CA. He attended San Diego State University, where he majored in public administration and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. Brian worked briefly for the City of Fullerton Redevelopment Agency and then attended law school at McGeorge School of Law, where he met the love of his life, Lisa. Following graduation, he was hired by the Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General in Sacramento. He rose to the rank of Supervising Deputy Attorney General, and in his long career he argued before both the California Supreme Court and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Brian loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hiking, fishing, road biking and mountain biking. He summited Mt. Whitney solo and Mt. Shasta twice. He also completed the California International Marathon. He was well traveled. He backpacked through Europe with friends on several occasions and did a missionary trip to Austria. He also visited Israel, which he considered a life-changing trip. Throughout his life, Brian lived the principles of his Christian faith, which he upheld through every challenge and every opportunity to be of service to others. He cared deeply for his co-workers, his friends from every stage of his life, his neighbors, and especially his family. He was active in church, men's Bible study, and marriage groups. He studied the Bible every chance he got. He is survived by his wife Lisa and their two sons, David George and Jonathan Evan "Jack", his mother Joan Livingston Smiley, and his sister Ellen Smiley. He was preceded in death by his father George Smiley and his son Joshua. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Brian's faith and life on August 26, 2017 at 11:00a.m., at Warehouse Christian Ministries, 9933 Business Park Drive, Sacramento CA.
