Charles Ingels Obituary

August 12, 2018 Charles "Chuck" Ingels died peacefully at home on Sunday, August 12, 2018. Chuck was predeceased by his parents, William Ingels and JoAnne Halbert Ingels. He is survived by his wife, Tracy Lesperance, his son Joshua Ingels, and his siblings Carol Green, Biff Ingels, Gary Ingels, and Becky Ingels. Chuck was raised in Merced and later attended Merced College, Butte College, Cal Poly SLO (B.S. Fruit Science) and UC Davis (M.S. Horticulture). After working as a tree and vine information analyst for the UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program, Chuck joined the UC Cooperative Extension, Sacramento County, in 1996 as a pomology and viticulture advisor. Chuck's knowledge and love of horticulture was wide-ranging, and his expertise was often sought after for numerous research projects, talks/presentations, education, and publications. Of his many published works, The Home Orchard: Growing Your Own Fruit and Nut Trees remains a UC best-selling book. Chuck's pride and joy was the development and oversight of the Fair Oaks Horticulture Center, a one-acre demonstration garden open to the public and managed by Sacramento master gardeners since 1998. Chuck relished interacting with the public and sharing best horticulture practices, as well as experimenting with grafting, espalier, and fruiting varieties. In addition to his love of horticulture, Chuck was an avid cyclist and enjoyed hiking, yoga, music, and giving back to the community in which he lived. A celebration of Chuck's life will be held in late September. Donations in Chuck's memory can be made to the Fair Oaks Horticulture Center or to Capital Public Radio.

It's been two months since you have been gone, yet there is hardly a day that goes by where I don't think about you or miss having you around to help me with some horticulture question or problem. I regularly refer to something you wrote or photographed in my horticulture work. I mentioned you at a professional landscape event yesterday and there were so many comments about how your advice was so beneficial to them. You are missed by so many, but your legacy will endure because you left such a mark in so ways.

Chuck, I have fond memories of you always in a caring and sharing mode. I'm going to miss your kindness and generosity.

I remember my first time helping you trouble shoot irrigation issues at the Fair Oaks Horticulture Center (FOHC). I happened to be there and you asked me to take a picture of the irrigation pipes that you had just finished unearthing.

I remember the amazing bus trip tour to the San Francisco Produce Markets that you led. It was an amazing day!

I remember helping you install the irrigation to six raised beds for the Herb Team at FOHC. You were so patient in explaining the whole set up. I had the opportunity to record you in action. The herbs look amazing because of your thoughtful irrigation plan.

I will always remember your kind suggestions as you passed by the herb beds at FOHC to help us improve.

Most of all I will miss seeing you and hearing your voice at the Master Gardener meetings, when you give presentations, and at FOHC.

Thank you for being such a beautiful soul.

Peace, love, and herbs always!

I thoroughly enjoyed working for Chuck during his years at the UC Sustainable Ag Research & Education Program and enjoyed seeing him in his stellar role as a farm advisor. I'll miss most his humor, unflagging good spirits, and my goodness his unbelievable energy and ability to get things done. He was also a fabulous photographer, always picking the shots that told the story and retained the beauty of the scene - crimson clover, fava beans and their beautiful white blossoms plus the shady orchards of the Central Valley. I used many of his images in presentations in schools, in news releases and publications because they so clearly told a story. Wow, what a loss.

As a 22 year Master Gardener, I value his ANR publication, "The Home Orchard", and refer it to friends and colleagues alike. He always responded promptly when I called or wrote him with tree questions, and he clearly cared so much about our environment. He will be sorely missed.

Chuck, you are loved, admired and will be remembered always. Although quiet in demeanor your lasting contributions to the community, your UC family and loved ones have been loudly heard. You have been a true gift. You'd be proud...I bought a bike and road into work! Thank you so much for all you have given. Vanessa Kenyon

I remember, as a child, playing in the dirt with my little brother. He had a special kind of connection when it came to the earth. We'd roll down hills and climb trees. We were at the creek daily, exploring every detail nature had to give. Chuck grew to be the most kind, generous, down-to-earth man I've ever known. Through his love for the environment and his ability reach others, he has left the world a better place. I miss you, Chuck

What an incredible man. Chuck learned everything and in true humanitarian fashion, gladly gave all the learning away as fast as he could. A pure inspiration to Master Gardeners everywhere. Thank you.

There are people who make our world a better place, who bring their own quiet beauty, kindness and generosity to everyone they touch. Chuck Ingles was one of those people. I feel privileged to have known him. May God comfort his loved ones and help them to understand they will be reunited with him again one day. Peace to you.

I lost my most amazing best friend. Condolences to Tracy, Josh, Biff, Gary, Carolyn & Becky. I cannot even fathom the loss for his Tracy & his family and all the giving back he did his whole life. He cooked, cleaned, shopped for me. On my worst health days Chuck would teach my yoga classes. He was beyond amazing with my nieces, my family. He was so happy to help anyone. Brilliant and was so a head of his time! Your legacy will continue. One never forgets kindness. Beyond my wildest dreams. He and Tracy were even going to move me home. So happy he had his amazing wife Tracy No words can truly say the special friendship. I shared with her that I took his pictures before he met her that he so loved! RIP! I miss your heart and your Chuckle. You touched so many

Chuck was a wonderful person, and always so kind and happy. He was so helpful to anyone who needed advice and guidance, and his positivity and zest for life literally lit up the room when he walked in. He was a good man who loved his family very much. I am honored to have had him in my life as a friend. We have lost a special spark, but that makes it more imperative to cherish his presence and what he stood for.
