On July 26, the much-loved son of Karen W. Smith and Robert D. Smith (deceased) and brother to Allison Smith and Jennifer Davis left us to join his wife, Cheryl, who died in March 2016. He was an outstanding individual. While his family lived in Nebraska, Eric became an Eagle Scout. After high school graduation, he went to the Colorado School of Mines, where he graduated with a degree in geophysical engineering, and worked a few years for Shell Oil in Houston. He then enlisted in the Air Force, went through OTS to become an officer, and worked as a meteorologist. Upon leaving the Air Force, he went to Fresno State to earn a Master's degree in Computer Science. He was then hired to work for the DOD in Monterey. He loved to write code. It was there that he met his soul mate, Cheryl, also a computer technologist. They were married in 1995. Together they shared a love for geology, IT, sports, and music. Eventually the couple came to Sacramento to join the rest of the family. Eric was a sweet, gentle, and loving person, who lost his life to cancer. His accomplishments were many and yet were achieved while living with a serious mental illness. A private family service will be held at Monterey Bay at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, please send remembrances to NAMI (National Association on Mental Illness) at and the .
