Ernestine D. McGovern "Ernee" of Sacramento passed away from natural causes on December 21, 2018 at the age of 95. Ernee was born July 29, 1923 in Sacramento to Ernest and Clara Dietz. She grew up in Sacramento, lived in Curtis Park and attended C.K. McClatchy High School. Ernee attended Stanford University and she would have been a graduate of the Class of 1944 but her college career was interrupted by WWII. During the war, she worked at McClellan Air Force Base in flight operations. There she established herself as an outstanding manager which later led to a career. She also met her husband, James, at McClellan while he was working as an air traffic controller. They fell in love, married and, soon thereafter, Jim was deployed to the South Pacific for three years. When the war ended, Ernee and Jim moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where Jim was employed as an air traffic controller. After about a year, they moved back to California to raise their family. Ernee worked for 25 years for the Acacia Mutual Life Insurance Company. She retired in 1980 and lived for the last 38 years in Campus Commons. She loved swimming and golf. She played golf all over the world and was always up for more golf outings. She belonged to The Women's Club at Haggin Oaks Golf Club and played every Wednesday for many years. She was an avid bridge player as well and played weekly into her 80s. While attending Stanford University, Ernee developed an affinity for Stanford football. She attended games and loved to tailgate under the eucalyptus trees next to the stadium. Ernee was predeceased by her husband, James, and her daughter, Kathleen. She is survived by her sons, Jim and his wife, Jennifer; Larry and his wife, Lynn; Kevin and his wife, Leslie; along with her grandchildren, Aaron, Mike, Maddie, Claire, Steve, Mike, Michelle, Brian, Shannon, and Mo; and great-grandchildren, Sienna, Jack, Joey, Chloe, and Jackson. The family would like to give thanks to Michael J. McGovern for caring for Ernee over the last several years. He gave her much love and encouragement in her final years.
