Mrs. Maggie Mae Penn (AKA "MAMA") was born in Shreveport Louisiana on February 25, 1920 to Hector and Annie Mae Sneed. Maggie's mother died when she was thirteen. She was raised by her father and eldest sister. Public education pass, the eight grade was not provided to "Negro Youth" in her Louisiana Parish. She married Robert Haggerty. The were blessed with two sons, Robert and Wallace. Diabetes left her a widow with two young boys. Employment was scarce a she was left to raise her young sons alone. Because her eldest Sister was married and stable, she took the boys in her home. She and her Sister Irma, found employment at a Military Base. Subsequently, Maggie met and married M/Sgt Howard Penn on May 18th , 1942; From this union, three children, Dianne, Mary, and Howard Jr. Their military travels took them from Lackland A.F. B., Texas, to Tripoli Libya, North Africa. Sgt. Penn retired from Mather A.F. B. Sacramento, California. Maggie purchased business cards, obtained a business license; and founded Penn's Janitorial service which she ran for 25 years. She served her community well. Maggie employed many young college students, and goal oriented youth. She was active wit St. Anne's Catholic Church on 24th Street. her devotion to the Church, School, Rectory, was unending. She and her late husband Howard co-founded the Knights and Ladies of St. Peter Claver, and Military armed Forces retirement club, Sacramento Chapter. She was preceded in death by her husband Howard P Penn Sr., Sons; Robert D. Roberts, Wallace Roberts, Daughters, Dianne Dates, Mary Bahati. She leaves to cherish her memory son, Howard Jr.,[Wanda] Daughter-in-law, Sandra Roberts, grandchildren' Vicki Lynn Roberts, Anthony Roberts, LoVell Fleming, Myra Thibodeaux, Darryl Hunt, [Brandy] Jill Arnold, Derrick Arnold (April) Tahira Carpenter,(Michael) Kahmara Penn (David Jones) and a host of grand children, family and extended family. She will be truly missed by all. All are welcome for visitation on Friday, August 17, 4-6pm and a rosary 6-7pm both at Morgan Jones Chapel of Chimes, 4200 Broadway, and attend her burial mass on Saturday, August 18, 11 am at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 7724 24th Street. Interment at Camellia Memorial Lawn.
