Shirley J. Upchurch Cameron, affectionate known as "Shirley Jean" to family and friends, was born in Durham, North Carolina on January 2, 1942 to the late William Hardy Upchurch Sr. and Maggie T. Upchurch. The eldest of three children, she received her formal education in the Durham City public Schools system. Graduating from Merrick Moore High School in 1960, she starred as a forward on the women's basketball team. Following High School, she married John A Cameron May 24, 1969 and remained in matrimony until his passing December 12, 2016. She received a BS from the University of Utah in Nursing in 1979 and worked for the Veterans Administration for 30 years as an RN where she received recognition for superior performance. Upon retirement Shirley and John relocated from Fayetteville North Carolina to be close to her boys and their families in Utah and California. John and Shirley settled in Mather California were they have remained for 15 years. Shirley was called home February 11, 2018, in her sleep in her home in Mather, CA. She is preceded in death by her sister, Catherine Daye Upchurch of Durham North Carolina. She will be forever remembered by her loving and devoted sons, Robert Cameron, William Edward Cameron, Stuart Allen Cameron, Ivan Cameron; and 17 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family members and dear friends. She is known for her love of the field of medicine, cooking, baking, gospel music, daytime soaps, bowling and traveling as well as the tremendous pride she had in talking about the many accomplishments of her grandchildren. The memorial service will be held on February 22nd at 9am at the Woodland Funeral Chapel, 305 Cottonwood Street, Woodland CA. Interment to follow, at Sacramento Valley National Veteran's Cemetery, where she will be to rest next to John at 5810 Midway Rd, Dixon CA 95620 at 10:00am.
