Of Citrus Heights, CA died on July 27, 2018 after a 6 months battle with cancer. Sylvia was born in Ogden, UT March 14, 1947 to CMSGT Frank Cole, USAF and Katie Holden Cole of Valley City, ND. Sylvia graduated from American River Community College and attended CSUS through 1974. Married to John Owens in 1971, the couple worked for the Sacramento Peace Center, Viet Nam Veterans Against the War, and the Seventh Step Foundation. Sylvia worked for the US Bureau of Reclamation for 7 years, Northern Arizona University for 3 years, and the San Juan Unified School District for a total of 21 years in many different secretarial and administrative assistant capacities. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother, aunt, and friend to many. Family always came first, and she was a tireless volunteer for the California Montesorri Project, Citrus Heights Soccer Club, Cougar Rugby Club, and numerous baseball clubs and leagues. An Artist for most of her life, Sylvia loved folk art and mixed media. She volunteered as an art instructor and art history instructor for several different schools in the San Juan district since 1982. She loved nature, plants, animals, and beautiful things and was a fierce and loyal friend. Sylvia is survived by her mother, Katie Cole; her sister, Cheryl Cothran; husband, John Owens; sons, Dylan Owens and Chuck Owens; niece, Amanda Hiette; granddaughter, Dacia Owens; grandson, Cole Owens and numerous cousins from North Dakota, Massachusetts, Norway and Florida. To honor her, donations may be made in her name to the Bristol Hospice Foundation or the Placer ASPCA. Celebration of Life will be held on August 17, 2018 at 10:00AM Citrus Heights Community Center, 6300 Fountain Square Dr, Citrus Heights CA 95621.
