With great sadness we announce the passing of Valerie Masiel, who died peacefully in Roseville, California on August 5, 2018 after a brief illness. In her last days she was surrounded by loving family and friends. Born in San Francisco, Valerie grew up in Richmond, graduating from Richmond Union High School in 1948 before earning her RN from Permanente (Kaiser) School of Nursing in 1951. A skilled and respected operating room nurse, she worked for Kaiser hospitals in Oakland, Walnut Creek and Martinez until her retirement in 1985. She was a gregarious, life-loving person whose joyous devotion and loyalty was felt by both family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick, and is survived by her children, Doug Masiel and wife, Susan Yamamoto; Debbie Masiel and husband, Marty McHugh; David Masiel and wife, Dawn Yackzan; and Denise Jackson and husband, Tom; as well as eight adoring grandchildren and five great-grand-children, with a sixth on the way. Nana's smile was infectious, her optimism inspiring, and her generosity without equal. She will be deeply missed by all. After a private interment at Oakmont Memorial Park in Lafayette, CA all are invited to a celebration of her life on Monday, August 13, 1-4 pm at Blackhawk Country Club in Danville, CA. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her name to Hospice East Bay.
